William1865:
Moreover, it is absolutely valid to compare the US to other countries and show how we are superior.
Then lets compare. Is the US military better supplied in combat than the Israelis? Is our command structure as flexible and responsive to the needs of the soldiers as the British? Comparing the American military to Saddam's military is only half the story. The US comes up short in any number of comparisons. It also comes up long in any number of others. If you're going to compare and contrast, compare and contrast everything.

Funniest line provided by the king of the red states:
"If I were a soldier overseas, wanting to defend my country,...

Good one George! Whats next - "If William/PhillyFan/MIB were soldiers overseas..."

Hilarious!!!!

"If I were a soldier overseas, wanting to defend my country,... first thing, i'd fail to show up for a physical as ordered".......King of the Red States.

Rummy, never let the truth get in the way.

WASHINGTON -- Despite Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld's assertion that the military is outfitting Humvees with armor as quickly as possible, the company providing the vehicles said it has been waiting since September for approval from the Pentagon to increase monthly production by as many as 100 of the all-terrain vehicles, intended to protect against roadside bombs in Iraq.

Army officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, acknowledged yesterday that they have not approved new purchase orders for armored trucks, despite the company's readiness to produce more. They said the Pentagon has been debating how many more armored Humvees are needed.

Rumsfeld, questioned by soldiers in Kuwait on Wednesday who said they have had to pick through landfills for scrap metal to boost vehicle protection, said the Army was working as quickly at it could to get armored Humvees to the front. It is "a matter of physics, not a matter of money," Rumsfeld said, adding that the Army was "breaking its neck." President Bush yesterday reiterated that "the concerns expressed are being addressed."

But executives at Armor Holdings in Jacksonville, Fla., as well as Army officials and members of Congress, said Rumsfeld's assertion that the protective equipment is being provided as quickly as possible is not true and added the company has been waiting for more purchase orders.

You can add the name of Trent Lott who has joined the list of GOP'ers critical of Rummy. He is now urging the removal of the Dept. of Defense Sec. In an article in my Spokesman Review he says in speaking to a local chamber of commerce gathering in Mississippi:
"I am not a fan of Rumsfeld. I don't think he listens to his uniformed officers.
Lott said Rumsfeld should not be forced to resign immediately, but that " I would like to see a change in that slot in a year or two."
Meanwhile at the White House, officials there said that President Shrub is unfazed by the intraparty attacks on Rummy, and believes the secretary is doing a "great job" running the Iraq war and overseeing the transformation of the military. Could Shrub be any more out of touch????

MIB:
As it turns out, a reporter from the Chattanooga Times Free Press named Edward Lee Pitts staged this whole thing.
Not so fast, my oft-wrong friend. The soldier who asked the question says the question was his and his alone.

QUOTE
The reporter, far from being the protagonist, suggested that he find “a less brash way of asking the question,\" but Wilson “told him no, that I wanted to make my point very clear.\"
So don't dismiss the opinions of the soldiers by claiming they were prompted to ask the tough questions. MIB, why do you hate the troops?

Oh well, now Osama bin Laden, who W Ltd. let get away, has officially annointed Zarqawi and called for a boycott of the Iraqi elections and for Muslims to engage in jihad against the American forces in Iraq....

On the home front, Rheumy & Co. are planning to slash spending on the F/A-22, because of the high deficits and the steadily rising cost of the Iraq debacle ($4.4 billion per month).

"We thought we were protected forever from trade policy or terrorist attacks because oceans protected us." —W. Bush, speaking to business leaders at APEC Summit, Santiago, Chile, Nov. 20, 2004

So the reporter and others who backed him up were lying, right? Hardly. The soldier, who asked a qood question--I have no problem with that at all--was used by a reporter. That's where the problem lay. Once again KW can't get the facts straight. *Yawn*
KeyWest Guy
So let me get this straight. You believe a member of the "elite liberal media" over a soldier heading to Iraq?

This must be Bizarro-MIB.

Btw, read the article I linked. It's got facts a plenty for ya, Your Honor.

Edited to add the following:

Time Magazine also confirms the solider's version that he alone came up with the question.

QUOTE
Wilson, of Ringgold, Ga., says he met and befriended Edward Lee Pitts, an embedded reporter from the Chattanooga Times Free Press, at California’s Fort Irwin, where his unit trained. Later in Kuwait, after Pitts learned that only soldiers could ask questions at the upcoming Rumsfeld meeting, he urged Wilson to come up with, as Wilson recalls, some “intelligent questions.” Wilson decided on one after his convoy arrived at Camp Arijan. The camp had hundreds of fully armored vehicles waiting for a unit scheduled to arrive in July. When Wilson asked if the 278th could use them in the meantime, the answer was no. Wilson then devised a question about the shortage of armor and showed it to Pitts. Even though the reporter “suggested a less brash way of asking the question,” Wilson says, “I told him no, that I wanted to make my point very clear.” Wilson says he also came up with three alternate questions on his own.

As for Rumsfeld’s brusque response — that even a fully armored vehicle “can be blown up\"–Wilson says, “Personally, I didn’t like that answer.” But as a George W. Bush supporter, he adds, “I hope I didn’t do any damage to Secretary Rumsfeld.”

I agree KWG!! The soldier said he asked the question on his own. I have no doubt he did, I have friends over there now complaining about the same thing he did. Its a damn shame people fighting for their country have to dig and scramble to find protection for the vehicles.

I think anyone questioning the soldier is questioning his interigty. If he says the question is his I believe him and pray for the safety of him and all the other soldiers over there
MIB
Who's questioning the soldier? I have no problem with his question. In fact, I think it was a good one. I just don't like a reporter feeding someone else a question, then several individuals backing up the reporter's contentions. Heck, it was even explained in a memo that was leaked.
Marc
This is a little off-topic, but Rumsfeld said that Flight 93 was 'shot down' . Apparently this was just a 'slip of the tongue'.

It's no surprise that the acronym "snafu" is thought to have originated in the US Army several generations ago. You'd hope that by now they'd have figured it out...

Lengthy piece in last Tuesday's NY Times (free reg req'd) detailing the Army's inability -- in fact, unwillingness -- to get out of its own way in equipping our soldiers in Iraq with life-saving protective gear.
