I've posted more than once on homosexuality in the priesthood. As they say about the Navy, without the homos, there'd be no Church.
According to pope ______* XVI, however, the homos must be, well, studied...for now. Why they're not concentrating on the pedophiles is beyond me, but then again, pope ______ XVI is supposedly the wise one....
NY Times: Vatican to check US seminaries on gay presence QUOTE
Investigators appointed by the Vatican have been instructed to review each of the 229 Roman Catholic seminaries in the United States for \"evidence of homosexuality\" and for faculty members who dissent from church teaching, according to a document prepared to guide the process.
The Vatican document, given to The New York Times yesterday by a priest, surfaces as Catholics await a Vatican ruling on whether homosexuals should be barred from the priesthood.
In a possible indication of the ruling's contents, the American archbishop who is supervising the seminary review said last week that \"anyone who has engaged in homosexual activity or has strong homosexual inclinations,\" should not be admitted to a seminary.

*I have left the name of this person blank lest I, a baptized and confirmed ex-Catholic, be accused of anti-Catholic bias for pointing out his service on behalf of a fascist regime, excused away though it eagerly is by so many.

I had to chuckle when I heard about this one. What is he planning to do? How is he planning his study? Interview alter boys? Celibacy is for all priests, no matter what their sexual orientation. If they can't handle the lack of sex, then they should consider another occupation. Otherwise, they will only make themselves and a lot of alter boys miserable. By the way, I am a baptized, confirmed and actively practicing Roman Catholic.

So the papists are trying to discourage gay men from joining and supporting the world's largest anti-gay political organization? Ironic.

All I can say to this is: Father Mychal Judge. The man died in the lobby of the World Trade Center while attempting to minister to his men in the Fire Department. He gave his life in a sacrifice no less honorable and meaningful than the men who ran up the stairs to their doom.
He was also an admitted and unapologetic, albeit celibate, gay man.
As another confirmed and baptized former Catholic, all I can say to Mr. Ratzinger (why exactly should I show him deference by using his Papal name?) is this - bring it on! Getting rid of gay but celibate priests (I have nothing good to say about priests who knowingly and continually violate their celibacy oaths, whether with other men or with their secretary, a la the Monsignor in NYC) will only damage the church more and speed its demise in this country.

The article continued that they would ban gay priests even if they had been celibate for 10 years or more.
Yeah, I also thought of Father Mychal Judge. And I think of those who try to tell me that Christianity is about Archbishop Oscar Romero and Martin Luther King, not just Fred Phelps or Pope Pius whatever number aka Hitler's Pope. Unfortunately too often the Christianity I see is Fred Phelps wannabes.

I alternately laughed and grimaced over this one, too. Chuckles for choosing between an altar boy or a "junior seminarian;" chagrin for the warlock hunt that's about to begin.

1st let me say that I've no regrets leaving the Catholic church years ago. That's why I'm a happy Episcopalian today. I hope many disgruntled & disenchanted Catholics will do the same.
2nd, although I've never attended a Catholic seminary from what I've read there's a large portion of men pursuing the Catholic priesthood that are gay. Considering that there's already a shortage of priests it'll be interesting to see how the church will react once it discovers how many humans they will need to defrock or kick out of seminary. These bigots going out on a witch hunt will truly be startled when the gay numbers come in. What will they do after they embarass themselves w/ this fact & will later need to save-face & reverse their hate-mongering dogmas. I'm just gonna sit back & watch the spectacle.

Yes, this sounds eerily similar to DADT. Some day, the Church will wake up to the shocking realization that it is running a priest deficit.

And here I thought being gay was almost a requirement for the priesthood.
When I was a kid we used to joke about the three basic wrestling moves: the half Nelson, the full Nelson and the Father Nelson. Being an Altar Boy was considered a dangerous profession.

I was an alter boy too, but nothing ever happened to me. There was one kind of hot priest that I kind of wished something would have happened with, but it never did. I find it ironic that a song we sing often in church is "All Are Welcome", I guess they should add the disclaimer..."unless you are gay".

We Episcopalians call this Radically Inclusive Love. It's not just a matter of talking the talk, but walking the walk. wink

I am not Catholic, but went to a very small Catholic University in rural Nova Scotia. Now granted, this was the late 1970's, but even back then, it was known that while the older priests/professors were celibate, the younger ones were anything but.
In fact, my second year, I lived in an overflow residence that was half priests apartments and half student rooms. I spent quite a few nights in some of the apartments. In fact it was with one of those younger priests (he was in his 30's) that I learned quite a few things. Some of which I still enjoy. (boy scouts had nothing on knot tying to that guy)
I see no reason for a priest, or nun for that matter to be celibate.

AP story:
the gay monsignor QUOTE
The Vatican said Saturday it has suspended a monsignor from a senior post at the Holy See after an Italian TV program using a hidden camera recorded him making advances to a young man and asserting that gay sex was not sinful.
The Vatican did not identify the monsignor by name. But Monsignor Tommaso Stenico confirmed in a telephone interview with The Associated Press that he had been suspended from his post at the Vatican's Congregation for Clergy, an office which aims to ensure proper conduct by priests.
"Don't condemn me," Stenico said, adding that the program "was done fraudulently" because it used a hidden camera.
In the program on private Italian network La7, a man identified as a priest is heard saying that he "didn't feel he was sinning" by having sex with gay men.
Rome daily La Repubblica reported Saturday that Vatican officials recognized the monsignor's office in the background of the program, which aired Oct. 1.

Not gay, just pretending, priest saysQUOTE
In an interview with La Repubblica newspaper, Monsignor Tommaso Stenico said he frequented online gay chat rooms and met with gay men as part of his work as a psychoanalyst. He said that he pretended to be gay in order to gather information about "those who damage the image of the Church with homosexual activity.''
Vatican teaching holds that homosexual activity is a sin.
"It's all false; it was a trap. I was a victim of my own attempts to contribute to cleaning up the Church with my psychoanalyst work," La Repubblica quoted Stenico as saying.
