Those crazy red-state heteros wasting time by legislating their morality!
QUOTE
\"It's just too sexually oriented, you know, the way they're shaking their behinds and going on, breaking it down,\" said Edwards, a 26-year veteran of the Texas House. \"And then we say to them, 'don't get involved in sex unless it's marriage or love, it's dangerous out there' and yet the teachers and directors are helping them go through those kind of gyrations.\"

Some unintentional humor from J.M. Farias, owner of Austin Cheer Factory (

You might have something there. I would like to see this guy's interpretative movements of "the way they're shaking their behinds and going on, breaking it down".
In another thread,

Hmm. On the one hand, lawmakers must have something more important to do with their time. On the other hand, maybe high school students (at least those 17 or younger) are too young to "bump and grind" for a paying audience. Either way, I think this pol is grandstanding (and, like TV in sweeps months, exploiting TheIdea!ofSex to get higher ratings).

Why didn't the article see fit to reveal this Houston Democrat's political affiliation? Google the guy for more curiosities.

Legislators seem especially upset by HBCU and HBCU-style bands and dance teams. Just my observation. They need to let it go.

Well one difference seems to be that Texas Democrats have some weird obsession with cheerleaders.
Also, Einstein, since you seem to be so familiar with Texas politics, who's the head of the Texas Democratic Party? I'll give you a hint, he wrote this:
"Why would Republicans launch such a direct attack on the mainstream values of the vast majority of Texas? Because they can't help themselves. The Party of Big Business has no commitment to the fundamental principles of our small-d democracy. The common good? Forget about it. Fairness? That's for cry babies. Securing the future? The future is now, pal, so you'd better get while the gettin's good."
Yeah, sounds real Republican. Nice attempt to cover the fact that you have no idea what you're talking about and that your head is in fact up your ass...

Well we can all thank Karl Rove for the people currently in power in Texas. He pretty much wiped out any chance of any liberals taking over again.
Unless of course I run for governor in 2010. Watch out!

Aren't cheerleaders SUPPOSE to be sexy? I mean, really now, would you want to look at someone whom is grossly out of shape trying to jump around on the field? Do they get cable television in Texas? Is that next to be outlawed? What about rap videos? Now there's some gyrating going on in just about every one of those videos. Where will it end? Books? Newspapers? Radio? Television? Billboard advertisements? They are opening Pandora's box, and they won't be able to close it once opened.

It's Halliburton's fault too. And Jeff Gannon's.
For what it's worth, I don't think one Democrat state legislator can really be considered "in power." His power is probably limited. Which is probably KR's fault too. Because if it weren't for him Texas would be more liberal and the Democrats would have more power and this particular Democrat would have a better chance of getting his bill passed. Wait...

I think the concern here generally is that this involves middle/high school students. The bill talks about school districts, etc. The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders aren't being targeted here.
At any rate this whole slippery slope argument is so bogus. Where does anything end? Presumably any law or regulation could be extended to any number of activities, but that's not necessarily an argument against it. Like a speed limit: If we set it at 55 on interstates who's to say it won't be lowered to 50? 45? 40? Or if we raise it to 65 who's to say it won't go up to 70? 75? 80? 90? Your argument ignores the fact that humans have the ability to reason things out, and sometimes they do. But whatever. I suspect radios and cable television will be around in Texas for quite some time, if that helps you sleep better.

What a great post William1865.
Life on the highways would be so much better if everyone just followed the speed limit. Kudos to you for bringing up that point and then rounding it into this subject!
I really enjoy seeing "real life" examples of some of the major issues that have been brought up.
Thanks again William1865!

No thanks is needed William1865, I enjoy reading a different point of view. Only after reviewing all sides of an issue can one make an educated decision. You have provided much needed information.
I really appreciated it!

Another case in point. Wasn't Cheney a cheerleader in University? Or was it Frist or Hastert?
Anyway, ANY of them doing a booty call makes me want to take a shower and scrub with a steel brush.

Great points Fantomas and Lksimcoe, I agree 100%!
Cheerleaders can be BOTH male AND female... that is something to consider. Just adds to this debate.

It was Lott. Lott was a cheerleader @ Ole Miss. Now I'm not sure but I think it's entirely possible that Cheney, Hastert, Frist and Lott all might have perhaps looked different 20,30,40 years ago than they do now. Honestly I can't think of any current member of Congress, D or R, in their current state of appearance, who I think would make a hot cheerleader.

William1865 makes a great point. Age descrimination, no matter what the cause, is NEVER good. Would the proposed laws effect all cheerleaders, no matter what age? In turn this could have a domino effect on people of all age brackets (20, 30, 40, 50, and even 60's!)
Golly Gee, this could be a terrible law, I only hope it never comes to a vote!
Thanks William1865

I can: Jesse Jackson, Jr. He's definitely handsome, especially in person, in a linebacker-ish way. (Barack Obama is also pretty handsome in person, IMHO. In fact, he's the cutest male senator by far. If I were straight or a lesbian, I'd put Mary Landrieu and Loretta Sanchez in the would-make-a-hot-cheerleader-or-fellow-field-hockey-player categories.) Evan Bayh would probably work best as a coach at this point.
