Full Version: Homers Down?

What do people think of Tom Verducci's assessment, \"Power Drain\" on Yahoo! Sports about there being a power drain this year? Sure some players haven't hit any homers at all, but are home run totals down overall? Do you think it has to do with the stronger anti-steroids policy (I think there's an element of coincidence)? Any thoughts?

Yeah... I read this article yesterday, too. I am sure we can all jump to our own conclusions regarding why homers are down. But one thing's for certain... My Yankees' Tony Womack sure isn't on steroids biggrin.gif !

Yes, at least through games of May 7th -- there were a number of articles talking about it. This USA Today article from May 10th was one of them.

An average of 1.97 home runs were hit in games through Sunday (May 7th), down 8.8% from the 2.16 average in the first five weeks of last season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. It's the lowest level for the first five weeks since 2002's 1.93 average and below the 2.14 average of the last decade.
Now, that same weekend is when Tino Martinez and Bobby Abreu both began home run tears. And just the other night the Texas Rangers hit 8 in one game. So the numbers may be different now.

Some of the players mentioned in the artcicle--like Brad Ausmus--aren't home run hitters, so the fact that he has hit just one so far this season shouldn't be a surprise. What is interesting is that so many power hitters seem to be having slow starts (I'll be kind) to their seasons. Of course, who knows how a healthy Barry Bonds would have altered the numbers.

Probably would have. And if he'd been taking his juice, probably even more.
