Foley's still running for his old (safe) seat, he's just not going to try a statewide race, which would be far more demanding. Oh, and I'm sure you're just terribly concerned about his dad.

Even though I am a Dem usually I am sorry that Foley dropped out. I think any gay person in the senate, out or not, who supports gay-friendly legislation, regardless of party, would get my vote. And I agree with Charlie in the Trees that he handled the issue about as well as he could without coming out and admitting that he is gay. I really think if he had done that he would not be electable as a Republican. The republican party needs more guys like Foley that show the rest of the party that gay issues are important.
I imagine that all the stress of running for Senate, coupled with the gay rumors and then his dad getting really sick, were just too much. I hope he stays in the house and continues to support gay issues.

Probably true, at least in Florida ... but a sad commentary on the party (or, more to the point, on the current state of American politics in general). frown
