Yeah, like those frauds over at The White House News Channel.

I just heard this coming in from across town on the news. You gotta know that the brouhaha from before the election had alot to do with this. I have always admired Dan, and think he is a class act. I wish him all the best and I hope this isn't the last we have heard from him.

This is only half the story - what remains is what will come of CBS' internal investigation into the matter of the questioned documents. It's interesting that those who routinely discount internal investigations conducted by police and lately, military forces have not questioned the validity of CBS' procedure. True, the results aren't in, but that's never stopped them from jumping to conclusions before.

I'm glad to see Rather go. He overstayed his welcome after he presumed to lecture Bush I in an interview over a decade ago. He was always a poor substitute for "Uncle" Walter Cronkite in my mind and his pompous hubris long ago became insufferable. Maybe I'll return CBS to my "favorite channels" button after he's gone, but for now I get my TV news from everywhere BUT Black Rock.
TomFord
He was well compensated for that supposed "class act." His reputation is in tatters. It's not just the stupidity of those obviously fake docs (which is bad enough), but the unnecessarily long, phony internal "investigation" before finally admitting that they basically run with anything.

It took all of one day for some nobody with a budget of zero to bust them. It took them, with all their millions, weeks to fess up.
NFLJockGuy
Though I've never been a "Fan of Dan"...this is merely a strategic move for CBS...With Brian Williams replacing Tom Brokaw in the coming months, CBS sees this as an opportunity to bring a fresh young face (AKA...John Roberts, probably) to try to boost the tarnished "Tiffany" network"s news numbers...The evening news numbers will be interesting to watch in the coming year....

Maybe well shall learn the outcome of the investigation before we hear the outcome of the inestigation into the outing of the CIA Operative, by Mr. Right himself, Bob Novak. wink

Thank you for finally admitting you have a role in the 21st Century Republican Party...now if you could have only brought yourself to vote for the man, you might have a more important role than spell checker...and as usual, this administration picks the worst possible candidate to fill a vacancy.

Can one of you other highly medicated libs please explain what it is the boobster is trying to say?

Philly, I'm gonna try, I speak East Tennessee since my partner's family is originally from there.

Philly, you called yourself "Spell Check Nazi". Now, for those that have taken and passed the Evelyn Wood speed reading contest and factor in their opinion of you, they picked out the word "Nazi" and did not retain the qualifying adjectives before that, er, Philly the Nazi.

I gathered that part. My next dose of lithium is due in two hours...I'll interpret the rest after that because I'm still confused as to whom you should have had the guts to vote for.

Pf. Thanks. Just wanted to make sure you read my post. wink

Doesn't it seem that the timing of Rather's announcement caught CBS News off-guard? Consider that NBC dubbed Brian Williams the heir apparent about four years ago and did everything in their power to showcase him and demonstrate his gravitas before he gets the anchor chair next week. And NBC announced he would take over from Brokaw at the same time Brokaw announced his retirement plans. CBS didn't make an announcement about Rather's replacement; only rumors about John Roberts, Scott Pelley, Ed Bradley....

Rather was always a better correspondent than anchor and if he remains with CBS (as he intends, but then, Cronkite wanted to be a correspondent) I look forward to his work from the field.

Dear Bobby,

Why can you not give PhillyFan the respect to which he is entitled? In addition, you should capitalize Republican when referring to the political party.

So John Roberts is one of the proposed replacements eh?

That should get the Amerinazi's like PF and gmg's panties in a wad.

That would make the anchors of 2 major US tv networks Canadian. As you know, the other one is Peter Jennings.

Yup. John Roberts got his start in broadcasting as a VJ on Much Music here in Toronto in the 1980's. Back then he was known as JD Roberts. He's Canadian born and bred.

Maybe we ARE taking over.

"Hardball" last night with Chris Matthews was really interesting. His first segment was about the demise of Rather. He had on this blonde bimbo from the Tradional Values Coalition. She is saying " I think Rather is deatched, I think he thinks he is way high above every body else, and he is arrogant". I think to myself, gee, that sounds just like Shrub!! Then she put her foot in her mouth by blurting out, " I don't think he likes Amercians". Say what?? Chris, just grilled her big time on this. He as well as I coulnd't beleive she would say something so stupid.
bobby78751
In my blury-eyed morning haze from sleep, I ended up on Faux News this morning and a guy on there was talking about how CBS is pursuing Diane Sawyer offering to do anything to get her as the Evening News anchor. That would be awesome for a woman to be the lead anchor!
MarcusF
Uh, Bobby, Barbara Walters did that in 1976.
Adam
BaBa WaWa was never the sole anchor of a major network's evening news; she worked with Harry Reasoner. Similarly, the incompetent Connie Chung anchored with Dan Rather for a brief time.

Actually, I think he pre-dated muchmusic, initially co-hosting The New Music (with Fashion Television's Jeanne Beker) and doing entertainment news for City-TV in Toronto. Apparently he worked on Canada AM (CTV) for awhile, then went to a station in Miami, I believe. He joined CBS in '95.

I think you're right. I remember him from his VJ days at MuchMusic, and after that as a news reporter for CITY-TV. I do remember him with shorter hair, and VERY, VERY hunky. The suits he wears doesn't do his body justice.
He has a great screen presence, that doesn't always come across as the White House correspondant.

Let's settle this right now. Either \"who\" or \"that\" can serve as a relative pronoun referring to persons.

\"That\" works for a class or type of person. This has been the case in English grammar since the time of Chaucer. The greatest writer in any European language, William Shakespeare, even does it! So Aubie's usage does not deserve a \"sic,\" because it's correct.

Grammar Slammer

And from Paul Brian's book and grammar site:
QUOTE

Using “who” for people, “that” for animals and inanimate objects

In fact there are many instances in which the most conservative usage is to refer to a person using “that”: “All the politicians that were at the party later denied even knowing the host” is actually somewhat more traditional than the more popular “politicians who.” An aversion to “that” referring to human beings as somehow diminishing their humanity may be praiseworthily sensitive, but it cannot claim the authority of tradition. In some sentences, “that” is clearly preferable to “who“: “She is the only person I know of that prefers whipped cream on her granola.” In the following example, to exchange “that” for “who” would be absurd: “Who was it that said, ” A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle” ?”*

*Commonly attributed to Gloria Steinem, but at least one source says she was quoting Irina Dunn.
As for the self-described "Nazi"....

Dan Rather to STRIP down? Where and when ? Of course I'd rather see Tom Brokaw naked but it should be interesting just the same. wink

Some news on Rather's replacement:

QUOTE
Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer is the odds-on favorite to be named interim anchor of The CBS Evening News when Dan Rather steps down on March 9, USA Today reports. The network is expected to eventually go with a multi-anchor format, mostly because it worked so well with Rather and Connie Chung back in the '90s.
I don't pick up any sarcasm or irony in the last sentence. But for some reason, I remember the Rather-Chung pairing as being nothing short of a debacle.
Munson Man
I think they're considering a multiple anchor format, with the anchors in different locations and having different focuses, much like the troika of Frank Reynolds - Peter Jennings - Max Robinson that ABC used so successfully after the Harry Reasoner - Barbara Walters debacle.

Debacle! Debacle, debacle! Debacle, debacle, debacle, debacle, debacle! Debacle!*

If you ask me, the fact that *BS News hasn't figured out a permanent anchor to replace Dan Blather proves that network news division is a frickin' joke. But since no one asked me, who gives a rat's patootie? biggrin.gif
bobby78751
I am a huge fan of CNN but I enjoy watching network evening news--it's sort of like a tradition I really picked up on when I was a kid. After watching Dan Rather for most of his 24 years (wow, I was in 10 when he stepped up to the anchor's desk!) I watched Bob Schieffer's debut last night as lead news anchor on CBS EVENING NEWS. Why oh why did CBS chose someone as advanced-in-age as Schieffer? There is no way he'll be there for 24 years...more than likely he'll be there for less than 5 or 10. Maybe he is a fill-in until CBS finds that just-right guy. Maybe they'll give Jim Acosta some extra duties to see if he has what it takes to move up in the newsroom. It's as if the network doesn't want to invest in and commit to a younger reporter for an extended amount of years. How disappointing for the other reporters who have worked there for many years. This might be my excuse to switch over to ABC NEWS.
Adam
CBS has always referred to Schieffer as an "interim anchor" (aren't they all just interim?) while the news division works to determine the future of the evening news--single anchor or two (like most local newscasts,) based in NY or somewhere else, a reporter who anchors or a person who sits behind-the-desk...

I'll miss the Dan Ratherisms.

Don't really have an opinion on Rather or any of the network evening newscasters as I don't watch any of them. But it was really classless of Walter Cronkite, Andy Rooney, Mike Wallace et al to bash Rather on the eve of his retirement. Really unneccessary even if they really do feel that way. Why not have to cajones to say it while Rather was still ensconced in the position?
