Full Version: Federal Report: Bush Fails on Civil Rights

QUOTE
This report finds that President Bush has neither exhibited leadership on pressing civil rights issues, nor taken actions that matched his words. The report reaches this conclusion after analyzing and summarizing numerous documents, including historical literature, reports, scholarly articles, presidential and administration statements, executive orders, policy briefs, documents of Cabinetlevel agencies, federal budgets and other data.
These are in just the first 11 pages of the 181-page document.:
QUOTE
Voting Rights: Despite promising to unite the nation and improve its election system, the President failed to act swiftly toward election reform.
QUOTE
Equal Educational Opportunity: Early in his administration, the President widely promoted an education reform proposal, the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), and garnered bipartisan support. Despite its worthy goals, however, NCLB has flaws that will inhibit equal educational opportunity and limit its ability to close the achievement gap.
QUOTE
Affirmative Action: The President’s stance on affirmative action is equivocal at best. President Bush has tried to please both supporters and opponents, a tactic that has resulted in a misleading and vague position. He has not exhibited strong leadership on this issue where leadership is vital.
QUOTE
Fair Housing: Policies instituted under the Bush administration have diminished housing opportunities for poor, disproportionately minority families.
QUOTE
Environmental Justice: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under this administration, despite some attempts, has not always been successful in advancing the cause of environmental justice.
QUOTE
Racial Profiling: Early in his term, President Bush promised to end racial profiling. Although he has not completely fulfilled that promise, he issued guidelines to prohibit racial profiling in federal law enforcement, an action unprecedented among U.S. Presidents. President Bush took other actions, however, that had negative effects.
QUOTE
Hate Crimes: The administration paid little attention to hate crimes until after September 11. Since then, the President’s words and actions have conveyed mixed messages.
I guess it's because it's hard being president...it's hard work.

Perhaps eating a pretzel is easy enough for the President.

Oh nevermind.

How about "Let's wait until we see the FINAL report?" This is only the first draft, presided over by rabid she-wolf in sheep's clothing and Bush foe Mary F. Berry, who has turned the US Civil Rights Comm. into her own personal, financially-mismanaged fiefdom, and cries "racism!" whenever someone tries to investigate her wrongdoings. Those of you who viewed tapes of her grilling FL election official during her post-election "investigation" into alleged irregularities down there - some of you DID watch those, didn't you??? - will recall that the chief value of her examining witnesses was a "how to" guide for asking ludicrously leading and abusive questions.

But don't take my word for it: read what one of the members of the Commission says about this draft report and the present sorry state of the commission. Link to 10-18-04 WSJ op-ed.

I'd love to see the final report, gmg. I mean;, I'm lesbian, Jewish woman with a disability so it's not like I have no interest. Can anyone explain, then, why it is being withheld until after the elections if it either exonerates Bush or is so partisan as to be unreliable, both of which you seem to be claiming?

I don't think the draft report can be seen as exonerating the President and I don't know that the final version is being withheld pending the election; neither the draft report nor the piece by Commissioner Thernstrom addresses that. Generally, a time for comment on draft reports is set aside, which you may want to avail yourself of given your interests, and those comments may or may not be considered in finalizing the report. Given what Comm. Thernstrom says though, it seems the Commission Chair is not too keen on considering opposing viewpoints, whether from within or without.
