The key Watergate figure will release
\"Deep Throat Brief\" through Salon.com next month. Is it Alexander Haig, Diane Sawyer ...? Will be interesting to see who he thinks it is (since on Mr. Throat, Woodward, Bernstein and Bradlee really know). This on the heels of Linda Lovelace's death ...

I am just enough of a geek to be excited by this news. I clearly spent too many years within the Beltway.
It'll be interesting to see what, if any, reaction Bob Woodward (who grew up next door to my father) has to Dean's pronouncement. My guess is he stays silent and neither confirms nor denies.
I know I'll be visiting salon.com in the future.

I think it was Plastic Pat - she was probably just tired and wanted to get back to Yorba Linda.

I've always thought so. That's probably why it was played by Hal Holbrook in All the Presidents Men.

Can someone refresh me on Haig's job in the Nixon admin? Was he on Kissinger's Nat Security staff? (Sorry, early Reaganzheim... oops, Alzheimer's setting in)

Haig chaired the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at least for awhile. he didn't strike me as smart or canny enough to be D.T.
Besides, Hal Holbrook didn't look like Haig.

Woodward and Bernstein have said they won't identify Deep Throat until the person is dead which eliminates certain possibilities. I always thought Deep Throat was an amalgam of a number of people within the Nixon Administration.

Al Haig was Deputy NS Adviser under Kissinger. If you want to understand the situation, see the very good TV film NIXON AND KISSINGER. Everybody was spying on everybody else, and Haig was inserted to keep an eye on HK, although he seems to have been fairly loyal to HK, arguably because he liked him and admired what he was trying to do. The film, based on Walter Isaacson's book on HK, argues that Haig's promotion to 4 stars, and his JCS appointment were incentives/rewards to encourage his "controlling" HK.
My favorite candidate is Mel Laird, but Haig is plausible. I know Haig smokes cigarettes [saw him smoking in DFW airport], and Deep Throat smoked. I don't think Laird does.
