Chief Justice Rehnquist's daughter (Janet) resigned her post today amid investigations into her conduct. She was the Inspector General for the Department of Health and Human Services. She was appointed in 2001 by President Bush.

The Senate Finance Committee and the General Accounting Office were investigating "professional misconduct" charges against her. This included allegations that she had improperly allowed the delay of an audit of the State of Florida pension system (a thank you to Jeb). The White House Council on Integrity and Ethics was investigating charges that she kept a handgun in her desk.

Interesting to note that Justice Scalia refused to recuse himself during the 2000 election deliberations, even though his son was in a position to profit greatly from the Supreme Court decision. Now the CJ's daughter turns out to get a nice appointment after her dad helped seal the deal. Interesting how intricately woven all of these things are -- the White House, the SC decision, Florida, etc.

The best part of this story was in the paper this morning - she said she chose to leave to "spend more time with her family", right.

Geez, is anyone at all surprised by this? I'm sure she's not the only one...has anyone looked closely at some of Bush's other agencies?

Also, why does there always appear to be some sort of official rigamarole or boondoggling surrounding Jeb Bush's Florida?

Finally, irony of ironies, Jeb told his begging fellow governors last week that they should NOT have their hands out expecting the federal government to take care of them (W. refused to give them money), YET THIS SLEAZEBAG collected FEDERAL DOLLARS for all kinds of programs and pork all last fall as part of the buildup to his campaign for re-election! He is just DISGUSTING! DIS-GUS-TING! I wish the people of Florida would wake up from this nightmare and elect someone ELSE--another Republican, a Democrat, but someone else who is not going to pimp his connections with his brother the way this guy has.
