Not really "Religion & Politics," but it seemed too somber for "Non-Sports-Related Topics." I didn't see a thing on TV about it. How could this have escaped attention?

QUOTE
It was an early Sunday morning at 16th street Birmingham Church the date was September 15, 1963. Sunday school was in session. Four young girls went to the basement to practice for a worship service, when a powerful bomb was thrown into the basement from a speeding car. [The bomb was planted, not thrown from a car.] The four little girls were instantly killed.

There were some articles. Google for "birmingham bomb church 1963" [leave out the quotes] to locate them. Example:

One of so many instances of racist, domestic terrorism our own citizens have faced...but we hear far less about this than about things that happen halfway across the globe.

If you have not seen Spike Lee's documentary, "Four Little Girls" about the bombing(I believe it was done for HBO), you have missed an amazing piece of work. It is one of the most moving and heart-breaking films I have ever seen - the strength and pride that these 4 families showed in the immediate aftermath and on the long road to justice is simply stunning.

Agree with you that the anniversary of this act of "home-grown terrorism" should have received greater attention--and should be a part of students' curriculum--but I did see a report on it on "CBS Evening News with Dan Rather."
