Excerpt:
"The prevailing myth in leftist circles is that talk radio is stacked against liberals. It's true that conservative hosts tend to have the largest audiences and the greatest success, but it's not because liberals haven't had their turn at the mike. Headliners like the impeccably liberal Mario Cuomo and populist left-winger Jim Hightower have tried and failed. On the other hand, some liberals have done well and established a following."
- - - - -
A possibility: Conservative radio is more sensationalist, derogatory, and (often) employs specific scapegoats that the majority of the listening market/audience can agree with (read: the LGBT community).
It's too easy, simple, and safe: I mean, shout, jerk your chain on the air, and scream that if THOSE people would just leave the planet, we could all "have it again like the good 'ol days".
Who couldn't create a 30-60 minutes about the planet as "me against the world"? And, with commercial breaks (for a breather)? Oh, come on..puh-leeze eek! eek! !!

Obviously Bluebird does not bother to listen to Rush Limbaugh, or read Andrew Sullivan or Tammy Bruce, et al... because if he did, he would know that they are quite well researched, and do not advocate such simplistic bigoted solutions. They are also quite measured in their deliveries. Rush can get a bit emotional sometimes, but it is not over the top (like some of out peacnik protesters). They would have been sued or worse, not read or listened to by millions.
The neocons attack a Politically Correct mindset that everyday is being eviscerated for all to see. How can anyone defend the 'Hate America First' crowd? They have been wrong on every aspect and prediction about this war and this Presidient. Peter Arnett? Peter Jennings? Johnny Apple?
FOX News has finally broken the relevance and mind control of the American Left on the media with fair and balanced reporting that reflects the -concerns- of American viewers, not the Euros.
Only the academic elite can still rail that the American Public (which supports this war and president Bush with 70% approvals) is 'misinformed' or 'stupid'. Their days of any credible influence are also numbered, as even the new crop of journalists are less likely to take their marching orders from the ivory towers. It is so transparent that this is all Bush-bashing, and a fear that Republicans will mess with their 'gravy train' in the Arts, Education, and Social Services.
I have never seen such an embarassing group of rent-a-mobs as this crop of peaceniks. It is always the same people regardless of cause, and at least that fact is becoming obvious even to liberal San Franciscans. USD$ 1M per day is what they cost the city for almost 2 weeks, money that could have gone to some of their favorite programs. I do hope they continue their street theatre, because it only furthers the neocon cause that the American public is finally awakening to.
I work in the belly of the beast, downtown San Francisco, and was witness to the disgraceful public 'Defecating and Vomitting'. To see those Rainbow Flags associated with this incident turned my stomach even more than their stench. This week the polls show even 'Baghdad By The Bay' (San Francisco) has finally tilted -majority- in favor of the war and Bush, and against these '60s retreads.
As a brain-washed boomer from the '60s, I am finally able to exorcise the ghosts of Vietnam, and be proud of my country, my president, and my military for doing the right thing the right way at the right time.
Bush will probably double his numbers in the G&L community in 2004, and this is what scares the liberals. A few points shift in the G&L and minority populations spells disaster for the Democrats. The 2000 election in Florida, especially in Dade & Broward Counties, was a perfect example of what the future holds.
I am heartened that finally many in the G&L community are exhibiting some intestinal fortitude and intelligence, and getting off the 'victim plantation'.
Keep up the good work PhillyFan, you would be surprised how many of us there are on OutSports who agree with you! But sadly we are all too tired (and busy) to argue against the same tired cliches with the same 3-4 tired liberals who use this forum to pontificate about their tired agendas.

. I don't think so!!! He is going to have to do something dramatically different in his policies and stances with and for the gay community for this to happen. If its one thing I will give Shrub credit for, its for his diversion policies. He and his administration are and have been masters at captivating and diverting the other things going on in America at this moment, namely the economy stupid! Which last time I checked is dangling somewhere between depressiona nd recession, give or take. Not only that but consumer confidence is in the toilet, businesses and countless tens of millions of Americans are out of work. And he is still proposing at last count maybe a $350 billion dollar(higher if he gets his way) windfall for the rich in the form of a tax cut. Didn't work the first time, and won't work the second time.

I think someone missed my point, it was not the Supreme Court angle.
The margin of Gore voters was no where near what was expected in the G&L and Cuban precincts of these counties. This has been well studied, and has been a featured topic of the Log Cabin Republicans as proof of their influence in Broward.
Given all the reasons Gore lost in Florida, I like the one on purging the voter rolls of felons as having affected the Democratic turnout in Duval county.
Democrats had their chance of revenge with the recent re-election of Jeb Bush over a very attractive and moderate Democrat war veteran. If they could not win that one, the handwriting is on the wall. Once again, the margins of G&L voters in Broward and Cubans in Dade rescued a Bush.
I think the scare tactics of the economy and stock market will not work like it did in 1992. There is a new FOX media out there that will prevent the blatant lies of 1992 that the economy was in the tank when it was not. It is the ecomomy, stupid, so don't try and lie or talk it down.
There is enormous pent up optimism and $$ just waiting to be unleashed, and I cannot image being part of the Democratic chorus that wants so badly for the war and the economy to fail so they can recover power.

I actually like it when, instead of spouting whatever the wacky right-wing line is, you come out with your own thoughts backed up by facts.
Just so you know NPR consistently now GOES OUT OF ITS WAY to get conservatives--sometimes extreme conservatives--to balance out stories. And let me tell you, yesterday morning I was awakened by NPR's broadcast of a BBC reporter's enthusiastic, unbroken narrative of the cheering crowds in Baghdad. He was NOT skeptical, he was NOT analytic, he demonstrated no journalistic distance. I can understand this because the scene was tremendously moving. But I got no sense--as was later confirmed by numerous accounts--of the continued fighting in other parts of Baghdad that have led to another Marine's death, or the battles on the outskirts of the city. So NPR, while not a sorry RNC PR outlet like Fox News, also is NOT Pacifica Radio. Now THAT IS LIBERAL-PROGRESSIVE.

Today's most active stock on the NYSE was Fox Entertainment. It traded nearly 28 million shares and was down $4.65 or 17 percent. Merrill Lynch lowered its rating on the stock from "buy" to "sell." Third most active stock was Hughes Electronics, which is being sold to Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. It traded over 18 million shares and was down $1.12 or nearly 10 percent.

Speaking of public radio, I have to give it to WBEZ in Chicago. The other day they had a whole program on the state of queer film. They didn't treat it luridly or dumb it down, but discussed Almodóvar's films, among others, and really looked at representations of gay life and desire, and homo and bi filmmaking in the new century.
Other recent topics: tort law and reform, patriotism and the military, the Black family, and war and literature. No shouting, different viewpoints, and really sharp people who know their stuff. I can't say that I ever NOT learned something new, not just facts, but real insight, from this kind of programming, which on TV is now increasingly pushed to cable channels like Ovation or Bravo, or HBO. A&E is trying hard to be another TCN or other commercial outlet. Oh well...it's all about the money!
I know this kind of radio station will never bring in the ratings or dollars of pre-programmed payola pop (Clear Channel) or syndicated distortion-spewing blowhards (Limbaugh) and racists (Imus), but hey, thank the God and listeners with temerity for public radio. We especially need some in-depth thought transmitted widely right now.
