Are high school lacrosse players more in the know about the wheelings and dealings of government than the most powerful members of Congress? Bush administration official Nick Callio, whose son is a lacrosse player at Washington's Gonzaga College H.S., was fielding calls from reporters this weekend about his son`s recent proclamations on a local morning radio show about the "shadow government" set up by the Bush administration in the wake of September 11.

Callio's son had called up the popular "Elliot in the Morning" program and bragged of touring secret government bunkers near Greenbriar, WV that could house a "shadow goverment" should the United States fall prey to a serious terrorist threat. Callio's descriptions of the bunkers were meticulous, noting even that they contained the prescriptions of every member of Congress.

That day, The Washington Post ran a cover story detailing the same "Shadow Governemt" Callio's son claimed he had visited with his father a month before. The Post story was news to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, who went on the morning talk show circuit the following Sunday to complain that he knew nothing of any "shadow government" and that he resented being kept in the dark.

Callio's son, meanwhile, who clearly hadn't been kept in the dark, was certain to face some punnishment from his uber-lobbyist father for his prank. "He'll certainly be sorry by tonight," Callio told the Washington newspaper Roll Call.

Roll Call: Heard on the Hill, Callio's Loose Lips

>>
March 04, 2002

Calio's Loose Lips. While White House aide Nicholas Calio is an old pro at the subtle art of leaking information to the media without any fingerprints, he's going to have to school his son in the practice.

Several HOH readers were stunned Friday morning to hear a young man identifying himself as the son of President Bush's "chief lobbyist" on Capitol Hill call into DC-101 - a local radio station that features a raucous show called "Elliot in the Morning"-during a discussion about the secret bunkers that house a "shadow government" that's ready to spring into action in the event of another major terrorist attack.

The young man said he "toured the bunker near the Greenbrier [resort] last month when he was out there with his dad during a meeting of top Republicans," according to one listener. The Greenbrier in West Virginia was the site of a retreat attended by White House aides along with House and Senate Republicans.

The young man then added that the bunker has a "supply of all the prescription medications taken by Members of Congress," presumably so that they could stay alive while others perished in some sort of attack - all very interesting stuff coming from the son of a senior-level White House aide. HOH called over to the White House to find out whether this was a hoax, leaving a message for Calio that someone claiming to be his son said some interesting things on the radio about the "shadow government."

After some time passed, HOH placed another call to Calio, who got on the phone to say he had been trying to track his son down. "He's at lacrosse practice right now," the White House aide said firmly. "He'll certainly be sorry by tonight."

Upon being told that the morning radio caller had said he was driving to Gonzaga High School at the time, Calio responded, "That would be him."

But Calio quickly pointed out that he had not given his son any special access to a secret location. His son had merely taken a public tour of the bunker that had been set aside years ago for use by Members in a crisis. The other two bunkers currently being used by executive branch officials are in a different location.

"It is not part of the shadow [government]," he said of the Greenbrier. "I don't talk to him about the other stuff."

When asked whether he would be talking to his son about calling into radio stations, Calio didn't hesitate: "Oh, yeah. Yes. We're going to have a long discussion."

I say kudos to the high school kid for having the balls to let the public at large know about what he was privy to (thanks to his father's own "loose lips")....sounds like the younger Mr. Callio has a good future in front of him....maybe I'll have to drive by and see one of Gonzaga H.S.'s lacrosee games to see if he is as cute as he is courageous (and adventurous?).

Hope "dear old dad" didn't whip him too badly for those transgressions but it sure sounded like Ol Man Nick was gonna let the teenager have it.

The bunker the kid visited has been open to the public for years, so his boasts were full of hot air. I'm not sure he knew that. So, will he be on trial too?

"Kid Full of Hot Air"

If I'm not mistaken, tuition is on the order of $25,000 per year now.

As the son of a former defense contractor employee, I say ... well I can't say what I want to say.
Suffice it to say that when your livelyhood, and unless this kid has a killer job down at the carwash, his father's livelyhood is his livelyhood, depends upon a confidential source, you keep your mouth shut about it. Perhaps it's the fact that on one side I grew up with a government contratctor dad and on the other a mother who is a shrink, but I have a great deal of trouble with people who tell others' secrets. If there was some great injustice in the government this kid was privvy to, there are avenues to redress that that do not involve betraying his father's trust. But that wasn't what was going on, instead ther was a story out there about bunkers and a "shadow government" and some high school punk decided to make himself feel important at the possible expense of his father's job. Not cool
