In Arizona, some people want to outlaw extending benefits to gays and to make any place in the state that has already done so take it back. Because apparently homosexuality is equal to beastiality, cannibalism, and human sacrifice. For a good laugh (or cry), read Molly Ivins' Column.

[Excerpt: The author of these novel ideas concerning homosexuality was state Rep. Barbara Blewster, R-Dewey, who explained that throughout history, cultures that have embraced homosexuality have also embraced bestiality, human sacrifice and cannibalism. She pointed to the Aztec culture at the time of the Spanish conquest as an example. Blewster also said that history repeats itself and that the Ten Commandments are still relevant.

Blewster said she does not know of any gay people who practice bestiality, human sacrifice or cannibalism, and she is not claiming that homosexuality always leads to these things. However, she said, "That's a progression of perversion, as I know it," and is akin to marijuana leading to harder drugs.]

You know, the lunacy of this woman's statements would make me dismiss her automatically, except that SHE'S AN ELECTED STATE REPRESENTATIVE! No one--NO ONE--should be surprised by the deranged arguments made by some folks against homosexuals. Just think of the arguments against equality for Black Americans, or Native peoples, or women...or the rhetoric against the Jews in Germany...people who hate will toss out anything. I sincerely hope that the reasonable voters in this woman's district retire her as soon as they can. She could use the time to reflect on how to find sanity and stay out of way of the rest of humanity.

Note the clever way I've combined two threads. One is this nonsense in AZ; the other is DADT.

Guys, she is (like FanTomas noted) a STATE REP. Not a congressman. Do you know how many backwoods, redneck state reps elected by their constituency of 45 in their holler are in Kentucky alone?

If you dig hard enough, you can find people of various political affiliations who say any number of things. I don't think most republicans would agree that gays are cannibals. Just like I don't think most of you guys will be heading up the Al Sharpton for Prez campaign.

Let's get some sense of context here.

State legislators like these, Blewster and Johnson, are the reason I am in favor of a strong federal government biggrin.gif . Whenever any politician talks about letting states have control over something, or giving control "back to the states" I think of the idiots that can be found in any legislature.

And quoting Paul Cameron! This man is so unethical a "researcher" that he has been drummed out of 2 different professional societies and declared persona non grata by a federal court because he deliberately misled the court about others' research. This is the man who once "re-analyzed" another scientists' work on child molesters and magically discovered that the original researcher was wrong when she found 0 gay child molesters in a sample of molesters. Without having any access to the original data, Cameron magically found 44 percent of the child molesters were gay - even some who had only molested girls.
