Frickin' hilarious!

Senator Womanslaughter is going to quit an organization he's been a member of for five decades--and to which he still pays dues--because he's just discovered that it discriminates against women. When Kennedy tried to smear Alito as a sexist, critics noted the Senator belongs to an all-male group called the Owl Club. In 1984 Harvard cut ties to the group because of legislation Kennedy sponsored but he remained a member nonetheless.

But here's the best part. He says he will quit, "as fast as I can."

Because, you know, the Owl Club is like one of those LA gangs where you gotta walk the line of a beat down by other members before you can leave and so it takes a while to get in good enough shape to quit.

Oh, he also says that he "probably" couldn't pass muster on the Judiciary Committee himself.

Mary Jo Kopechne was unavailable for comment.

Here we go again. Just for the record, Harvard College cut ties with ALL of its "final clubs," which are like fraternities (though some are much older), in 1984.

In addition to the Owl Club (which was founded in 1745 by no less than George Washington and John Adams--yes, our first and second presidents, an elitist cohort if there ever was one), and which is fairly low on the social totem pole, Harvard cut ties with the Porcellian Club (the most blueblood of all) and the A.D., the Fly Club (FDR's), the Spee Club, the Fox Club, and the Phoenix S.K. Club. Most began as fraternities--some of which are known to be "elitist" and sex-selective, as far as I know.

Good for Kennedy to quit the Owl. At the same time, I don't think I've ever read that the Owl or any of the other final clubs officially advocated to have women or racial minorities barred from admission to Harvard.

Indeed it is, for that is the point here. Someone finally took that fifth out of his hand in time for him to realize he looked like the biggest frickin' hypocrite in D.C.

Now that that's over--and Kennedy stopped drinking years ago, as did W, we've been led to believe--what about Alito, who couldn't remember a thing about joining CAP and praising it? I mean, should someone with such a patently faulty memory--or who's such a blatant liar--be confirmed to become a Supreme Court justice? Because say what you will about Baby Teddy, he won't be sitting on SCOTUS for years (and even I'm thankful for that)!

Well that's a breath of fresh air!

Gee, and all this time I thought the title of this thread meant Teddy was "ending his relationship" with NOW. They sure are awfully forgiving of his misogynist transgressions over the years, although I doubt if they think of them in that term.

Before people condemn social clubs like these and Greek-letter groups, let's not forget that the I Amdt's freedom of association protects us as much in whom we choose to associate with as it does from whom we wish to avoid.

I'm far from being a liberal or conservative, but I think it is perfectly acceptable for a man to belong to an all-male club. Hell, isn't The Junior League an all women's club that is active in its desire to keep our "undesirables"? Last time I checked, most of the JLers were white republican women.

Agree 100%, Aubie. How the hell can men be expected to "form close friendships" when they can't be left to themselves to do so? "Stop the war on boys" - young and old!

The "debate" over all-women v. all-male colleges exemplifies this double standard, which can be summed up as "women-only colleges, OK; men-only colleges, EVIL!" I'm glad I attended an all-male college for half of my u-grad years; that's where my closest friendships are and that's where I expect they'll remain.

In short, "no girls in the fort!" biggrin.gif

OK, I hope I'm not dating anybody, but who here remembers the Little Rascals/Our Gang and their "He-man Women Haters Club"? Remember how Darla was always ticked she couldn't get in, which troubled Spanky, because he had a crush on her? smile.gif

It was Alfalfa that had the crush on Darla. Sheesh, you can't even get old re-runs right!

I guess some of us are just too old to remember all these things. ohmy.gif
