The Houston Astros say they will trade or waive Julio Lugo after he was arrested for allegedly attacking his wife after last Wednesday's game.

This seems like a swift and drastic response considering so many althetes (in various sports) have been charged with similar crimes (J.Kidd and J.Richardson in NBA, for example).

Kelvim Escobar of the Blue Jays, for example, was recently filed with a suit from a woman who claims he drugged her, had sex with her, and videotaped the whole thing. The incident supposedly happened 2 years ago... and the woman has the tape. Escobar, meanwhile, is being moved from closer to starter.

\"We'll either trade his contract or put him on waivers at some point,'' Hunsicker said. \"If we reach that point and still haven't been able to dispose of his contract, the final alternative would be to release him.''

Lugo was arrested Wednesday night after a game with the Atlanta Braves, charged with misdemeanor assault for allegedly attacking his wife at Minute Maid Park before the game. He spent the night in jail before making bond, then was designated for assignment later Thursday.

Lugo denies striking his wife, and his lawyer has said he believes Lugo has a good case.

Interesting response by the Astros.

On the one hand, sports ought to discipline its athletes when warranted. On the other hand, you're still supposed to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Yeah, thank you! If he's guilty of this brutality, then get rid of his lousy ass.

But has Lugo been arraigned? tried? convicted? Other than in the press?

Well, Gentlemen, welcome to Texas justice.

One big difference between Kelvim Escobar's situation and Lugo's is that Escobar has only a private civil lawsuit filed against him. It probably involves a request for money damages, under circumstances where you have to wonder about the credibility of both sides and especially the claimant's motives in suing so late. It doesn't seem that any criminal chareges were filed. Lugo, on the other hand, faces a much more serious "live" criminal investigation for domestic violence against his own wife, a felony offense in most states.

Sounds like the Devil Rays are opening a home for wayward boys. First Rocker and now they sign Lugo. Man Pinella must be hard up.
