He was mentioned in another thread, and he's got a new book out shortly called \"Skipping Towards Gomorrah\" in which he takes on a number of conservative types...

[quote]Bill Bennett. Robert Bork. Pat Buchanan. Dr. Laura. Bill O'Reilly.
They have written bestseller after bestseller condemning the sins
and liberal views of America.
It's time for someone to speak up for the sinners.

Dan Savage is irreverant, irrepressible, opinionated, and he's
had it up to here with the moral, conservative scolds who
proclaim America is slouching towards Gomorrah (to use
Robert Bork's phrase). Are we really that bad?

Yes, we are! And in Skipping Towards Gomorrah Dan Savage
eviscerates those cynical screeds as he takes readers on a
wickedly funny tour celebrating America's sinners. He commits
each of the Seven Deadly Sins himself (or tries to) and finds
those everyday Americans who take particular delight in
their sinful pursuits.

I liked this one: [quote]Swingers organizations advertise themselves and their conventions, local clubs put up Web sites, individual couples have home pages and take out personal ads—all in an effort to attract new, previously monogamous couples into the lifestyle. Every evil action that conservatives accuse gays of—recruiting, cheating, living a 'lifestyle'—these married heterosexual couples are actually guilty of.
Hetero perverts, ruining the Amer-a-kun family, causing society to collapse etc.

Clearly writing with BoSoxRudy, W1865 and a few others here in mind, comes this rant: [quote]One of the dogmas of modern gay life is the pride is always good for us, like vitamin C. And like vitamin C, massive doses can supposedly cure anything. HIV infections rising? Spend public health money to boost gay men's self-esteem and feelings of gay pride. (Never mind the studies that show the more self-esteem a gay man has, the liklier he is to take sexual risks.) Not convinced that hate crimes laws and employment protections for homos are good ideas? Clearly you suffer from a worrisome case of gay-pride deficiency. Think gay men over fifty look ridiculous with their bare asses hanging out of leather chaps? Take these gay pride supplements, and you'll feel differently! The gay man who doesn't take pride in all things gay—without question, without thought—has long been accused of self-hatred. These days they're also accused of Demonstrating Insufficient Concern for Gay Youth. Gay pride isn't a slogan anymore or a rallying cry. It's dogma. Gay pride has become a sort of gay civic religion.
Well, since I'm anti-religion, I won't partake in that one either.

Personally, I think Dan is better when he's counseling people who like to sniff people's feet or have leather clad lesbians in fishnets pee on them than when he's making social commentary, but he's certainly become quite the Media Ho.

I've always liked Savage, and became even more fond of him when he mentioned recently that one of his favorite writers is Florence King, formerly of National Review (see the FKing post for details).

I think Savage is hilarious and actually has a lot of common sense.

What's interesting to me is that I have an online friend that I was sure would be a fan, but he intensely dislikes Savage. He says Dan is too nasty and his advice is wrong as well.

I highly recommend his book, The Kid to any- and everyone here.
