Barry Bonds says he's retiring after the 2006 season. The whole article is full of his usual whining, such as:

QUOTE
\"The game (isn't) fun anymore. I'm tired of all of the crap going on. I want to play this year out, hopefully win, and once the season is over, go home and be with my family. Maybe then everybody can just forget about me.\"
-----
\"I'm clean, I've always been clean,\" Bonds told USA TODAY. \"But it never ends. It seems like every reporter from last season to this season has reported and opened up a new can of (expletive). And I haven't even been to spring training. At least let me get to spring training and (expletive) up before you crucify me.

\"Thank you for all of your criticism. Thank you for dogging me. The latest thing is that ESPN says that Barry is still big. They say I didn't lose weight. Well, you know what? I am still big. I'm fat (6-2, 230 pounds). I can't do much. I can't train like I used to. So the weight stays. I'm just not a skinny person, dude, I'm not. I never will be.

\"So what (are) they going to say now? Are they going to say, 'Wow, I guess it can't be steroids anymore because he didn't lose all that weight?' Or are they going to be mad that I'm fat. Come on, which one is it?\"

All I hear is:

Waaaahhhh, people are picking on me, waaaahhhh

Please, get over yourself Barry. You are at the center of a steroids scandel and a public figure to boot (who owns one of the most prestigious records in MLB).
George Twins fan
Later, that same day....

Barry gives an interview with MLB.com and says he will play in 2007, provided his knee holds out. Maybe Bud Selig can hire Tonya Harding's goons to see that that doesn't happen. Or maybe he can join Outsports most infamous BB (Bluebird) in that place called retirement. Play, don't play, whatever. Just shut the f**k up about it already.

I know we had Pretty Boy as the He Who Shall Not Be Named. Can we have another-He Who Shall Not Be Mentioned?
Bill W
You would've told Muhammad Ali to "Shut up and retire" 20-25 years ago, right? At least BB won't be leaving with brain damage.

Does anyone remember Barry when he was with the Pirates? He was a twig! I want to know how he bulked up that much if he was "clean". Hmm...??

*Yawn*

Barry Bonds apologists are so boring.
Bill W
You guys have heard of legal OTC supplements and weightlifting as ways to add bulk, I'm sure. But I'll not confuse you with established facts, especially since most of you don't know what a "steroid" is. Tra la.

Greatest player in at least 40 years.
Shytownmofo
Steroids aren't really the point. The point is his repugnant, "I deserve everything on a silver platter just because I'm Willy Mayes' godson" attitude, which he's always had. The fact is, he's always been a jerk, and has not endeared himself to hardly anyone. Greatest player in the past 40 years, maybe. Biggest ass****, definitely.
George Twins fan
Don't hold back Shytown, tell us how you really feel!

I agree 100% with you. I hope he gets to 1 HR behind Ruth and then tears his achilles or some other devastating, career-ending injury. Then we can be done with him for good. He's just such a freakin' martyr.
Shytownmofo
Hehe. Nahh, I just get tired of the apologists for Bonds, or even worse a few of the people who say that racism is the reason why he's not embraced by more people. He's a tool. Deal widdit.
Bill W
Maybe he is an ass****. Ted Williams frequently was one. Who CARES?
Shytownmofo
Well, at least Ted Williams had some semblance of grace and dignity, and knew when to STFU, which Bonds doesn't. And obviously, you don't, either.

I hope someone beans Bonds in the ribs. Or in the knee or elbow, and puts him away for good.
Joe in Philly
ESPN had a lot of coverage on Sportscenter on Bonds reporting to camp. He sat down and talked to a bunch of reporters and was polite, funny, decent, completely in good form.

Certainly he is capable of this all the time, but too often he's the opposite. That's the problem. That's why people don't like him. And he only has himself to blame.
Bill W

Awfully subjective, isn't it? I've seen Bonds show a "semblance" of the same, as JIP says above.
Joe in Philly
Five words I never thought I'd read: Barry Bonds impersonates Paula Abdul.

eek!
JC
Very possibly the most unexpected picture of the year.
Adam
Gee.....You think this exhibit of team comraderie and team spirit has something to do with the upcoming reality series Barry Bond's doing for ESPN? Maybe I'm just too cynical. rolleyes.gif

Adam I was going to post the same exact thing when I woke up this morning. Such obvious phoniness. You don't go from being the nasty, bitter, surly, roid rage, "I'm-stealing-whatever-ball-and-shooting-whatever-dog-that-comes-into-my-yard" neighbor (it's becoming much clearer why Bill W worships at the Altar de Bonds) to managing the local Little League team and opening a doggie day care overnight. These contrived attempts at transformation aren't even worthy of an ABC Afterschool Special or a Very Special Episode of Blossom.

Bonds donning a wig is suppossd to help give us the warm and fuzzies as he goes after the home run record. Way too little and way, way too late.
George Twins fan
Just saw a clip on Cold Pizza this morning of Bonds' Paula Abdul impression. At one point he holds his hand to his ear like a phone and says (in a very fem voice) "Call me" to one of the contestants in an obvious attempt to make fun of Paula's alleged affair with one of the AI contestants.

Hmm, so it's okay for Barry to make fun of unproven allegations against a judge on American Idol, but when someone makes fun of, or merely asks about, the allegations against him, I have a feeling he rarely finds the humor in it.

Barry Bonds showed up in drag again today and in an announcement that clearly has nothing to do with any of this (cough, cough) ESPN says the first episode of its reality series, "Bonds on Bonds," will air April 4. They promise that the furst episode will include "footage from spring training."

Yeah, I made a spelling error. So shoot me. Doesn't change his repugnant attitude. Yes, I know he's Bobby's son as well. I don't believe he's in the HOF, tho.

Jim Baker of Baseball Prospectus says it perfectly (and NOT worshipfully):

QUOTE
Who are these writers agitating for Barry Bonds to retire and what the hell is wrong with them? Why would they want someone who has figured out the game the way he has to depart from it? Because he's surly? Who gives a rat's ass? When a fan is sitting in the upper deck, what do they care have whether or not a player answers questions politely? They want the big show; the grand gesture. They want the long fly. Think about this: would you rather see a ballplayer hit a home run or would you rather read a pithy remark he made?

Here's an idea for the writers: leave Bonds alone... I don't need to see that wish-I-were-anywhere-else-but-here look he gets when surrounded by reporters ever again, do you? I will miss watching him hit, though. So, just don't talk to him in 2006. Let's just watch him play instead.
Bill W
Except no one knows how "performance-enhancing" they are with regard to baseball, anymore than the "red juice" Willie Mays kept in his locker.
Joe in Philly
It's fairly obvious to all but the oblivious.
shore
Bill W, I for one--a very casual baseball observer, but more keen doing the playoffs and WS, do not want to watch a juiced up player hit homers into the upper deck; I do not want a juiced up player to have homerun records, hits records or any records. I do not want juiced players on the field. Barry Bonds would be my number one target.
MIB
Ban him.

Immediately.

For life.

What's the matter with Barry...he's a BUM!!! biggrin.gif

The saddest part of all this is the Bonds apologists who call themselves baseball fans will continue to make every absurd excuse for him.

Here's hoping Bonds never hits another homerun.

Let's just go on record and say not every gay man in a gay-friendly gym in his 40's and 50's with a shredded physique takes steroids. Most work very very hard to stay in shape. Even the HIV+ ones.

That's just not a very cool thing to say.

shore:

But by the galaxy-wide definition of 'juiced' around here, that would encompass hundreds of batters and pitchers from the mid-90s til 2004.

There's testing being done now. What's the point of all the retrospective lynching? (and lets not forget the TONS of illegal leaking of evidence that's being done to journalists on these issue.) Face it, from '96-04 use of "PEDs" was the norm for at least a large minority of players. You can't rewrite history.

MIB, you're cute, as on the current evidence no one has the power to ban BB under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement. Maybe Dubya can declare Bonds a terrorist?

Even with this new highly deetailed account of Barry Bonds' performance enhancing drug use (including human growth hormone and Clomid, a fertility drug for women to counteract the depletion of testosterone caused by stroid use) what can the baseball's grand poobahs actually do? As of now, without a failed drug test he can't be suspended, he can't be forced to retire, his records can't be expunged without bringing into question other records. And, of course, the powers that be in baseball cannot go after Bonds without having to look at their own complicity in looking the other way as steroids and other performance enhancing drugs became so prevalent in the game they were supposed to police.

Unless Selig invokes some special powers to expel Bonds fore the good of the game, we may be stuck with a season in which a known cheater breaks records all the while reveling in the boos from the stands.

Good Hands
I am one of those who got turned off major league baseball in 1994 when millionaires fought so much that they shut down the game, not even playing the World Series. And then to have watched over the subsequent years the juicing that was going on, and being ignored or winked at, further eroding the integrity of the game, almost makes me long for the good old days when drinking, gambling, and women were the problems.

Barry Bonds is one of the best players in baseball history, imo. Barry Bonds did not need to go on the juice, but he chose to. Now that it's coming out, he's a lightening rod. Not surprising given both his skill, performance both before and after the juice, and his temperament.

Bill W., I've read several comments from you about this. Do you really think this is a lynching? Leaving aside the comments directed at you by some of the posters on here (after all, in this day and age the best way to discuss is not to discuss but to denigrate others rolleyes.gif ), do you see Barry Bonds being lynched? I just can't see that.

He actually reminds me of Pete Rose in some ways (although Rose gambled in direct violation of the rules of the game while baseball's policy of benign neglect allowed Bonds, McGuire, Palmerio, and company, to do things that weren't necessarily rules of the game). Their skill level made/makes them hall of famers, but their actions assault the history and integrity of the game. Many white people do not like and do not support Pete Rose, even to this day. In part because many people, white, black, and every shade in between, don't like arrogance and surliness, whatever color the person is.

When Ben Johnson cheated to win the gold at the Olympics, he cheated 3 other black men out of what was rightfully theirs. Carl Lewis deserved to win the gold in the track, not in a ceremony later, as did the silver and bronze medalists (Linford Christie and Calvin Smith, I believe). Barry Bonds has passed Willie Mays on the home run list....Willie Mays doesn't deserve that. Hank Aaron doesn't deserve to have his record broken by someone who uses performance enhancing drugs to do it. And, oh yeah, Babe Ruth doesn't deserve to be passed that way either.

Palmerio was made to look the fool when he vehemently denied using steriods, then tested positive for them. By his Clintonesque dancing around terms and definitions, McGuire used up his credibility. Bonds has the chance to own up to his actions and retain/regain credibility. But not if he points at others for what they did instead of owning his own actions. I actually hope he will decide to use that "me against the world" attitude and tell it. He might even have a bigger role in baseball history that way than even with just his career statistics.

I heard on ESPN today that if the USA team makes it to the next level of the World Baseball Classic, Barry Bonds wants to join the team. Well, it would certainly bring more interest to the games if nothing else. Unfortunately, it would be the wrong kind.

So he doesn't want to play at the beginning, lower level of the tournament, huh? Instead he wants to jump on the gravy train when the team is closer to their goal.

What a selfish prick.

Newsday:

QUOTE
Roger Clemens, here pitching for Team USA, called the information on Bonds \"a witch hunt,\" adding, \"You still have to hit the baseball.\"

Selig has said many times that he can't envision altering baseball's record book; Bonds enters the season with 708 home runs, and the new book reports that he was using steroids when he set the single-season mark of 73 in 2001.

\"We have no empirical data before 2003 [when baseball started testing for steroids],\" Selig said.
Now why would a large, over-40 superstar who's performed at his age like no one else talk like a "Bonds apologist"? Could he be using more than Vioxx? He's SO much larger than he was 20 years ago...

I don't think Clemens was ever small, and certainly he wasn't as slender as Bonds once was, but if there's some information about Clemens using illegal substances let's hear it.
