Full Version: Prince, Jehovah's witnesses and no more Cream

My alltime favorite singer is Prince. Now the purple one has become a very devout JH. He cannot sing many of his classic songs such as CREAM, DARLING NIKKI and many other. Even 1999 is off limits. I'm not ridiculing him. It's his faith. I still cherish his music. It's classic stuff.

Prince has proven himself to be rather chameleonesque, not only in his music styles but also in his statements and beliefs. He has announced his retirement from touring at least twice, but still tours rather frequently. He has stated that he's done dealing with major labels in any way shape or form, then put out albums on both Arista and Sony. He has stated he doesn't ever want to be called Prince again, then took the name back in 1999. He's denounced electronic instruments as "soulless", then repeatedly used them since. He declared that he'd never work with Wendy & Lisa again unless they denounced their "sinful" homosexual ways, but recently Wendy worked with him in the studio (and yes, she's still a lesbian).

Of course, none of this would matter if he weren't so damn talented. Even at his worst, there's still usually something worth listening to. I hope he can reconcile his beliefs with his muse, and get back to making good music. His "I'm a Jehovah's Witness" album Rainbow Children was musically intriguing, but lyrically awful.

Wow, can you say hypocrite? I will believe him when he starts signing over the royalty checks to the church. For someone so successful, you'd think he wouldn't be so willing to bite the hand that has fed him for the past two decades. I remember back in the 1980's when Donna Summer discovered religion, denouncing the very people that made her the disco diva that she was. It backfired, and she did a huge back-peddle to recover her career. I wonder if the same will happen with Prince or @ or whatever he is calling himself these days. Sounds like the poor boy is suffering more from an identity crisis than lack of religion.

The purple one has always been deeply religious. Any cursory listen to the lyrics of any of his albums bear this out. So, it's not really a departure of any means, save for his now professed JH alignment. What I've always found fascinating is how he freely substitutes "God" & "lust" in his lyrics.
Lex, I didn't know that dirt about Wendy & Lisa. Duh. Are they a couple? And I thought that way back in the 1999 era, before Wendy was even around, the videos always featured a lesbian vibe.

Prince has been JH for at least 4 years now. This isn't exactly breaking news.
Elemental
Not breaking news, but the JH have just been announcing how he won't play certain songs anymore.
