Irrespective of what one poster thinks of Dean, I fully expect him to announce that by midnight tonight he will have raised at least $15,000,000 towards his campiagn fight. Way to go Dean supporters, and way to go Howard! wink

But W has condoned his Secretary of Defense repeatedly insulting two of our major allies in a manner that is unprecendented for a Cabinet-level official; he's been silent as members of his administration spread rumors that one of those allies was issuing visas to terrorists (a grotesque lie that has subsequently been buried); he's said nothing while yet other other members of his administration referred yet again to allies as \"chocolate makers\" in an attempt to be snide; he's kept his trap shut as Congressional leaders of his party and their proxies have insulted the patriotism, the beliefs, and the lives of members of the opposition party; he has refused to condemn the deranged, perverse comments of the leader of yet another allied nation, when that crackpot, among other things, claimed that Mussolini merely sent his enemies \"on holiday\" even though it's well known he killed quite a few and rounded up 7,000 Italian Jews for the death camps; and finally, W has lashed out viciously at a news reporter, calling him an \"ass****,\" I believe, when he thought the camera wasn't rolling.
Mr. Apple, meet Mr. Orange.

When was the last time Mr. Cheney launched into a profanity-filled tirade like Herr Franken did? And I believe it was William1865 who addressed the "ass****" comment. (Mr. Bush should remember to always be careful when in the presence of a microphone.)
fantomas
Mr. Franken is a private citizen; the people I named are all tied to the government, so they should be held to a higher standard.

Mr. Franken was not insulting our international allies, whom we're now begging to help us. Mr. Rumsfeld was.

And now, we learn, someone involved with Mr. W has outed a CIA operative/agent. I guess Mr. Franken's tirade--which hardly compares to the nonsense that we've seen from members of Congress, like Bill Thomas, or Tom DeLay, or even that fat, truth-challenged slob Rush Limbaugh--is still far worse.
p2insdca
SO MIB if this is true then Bush is worse than Dean? Or will you change the rules to fit the facts yet again?

"Inside, Rove was talking to an aide about some political stratagem in some state that had gone awry and a political operative who had displeased him. I paid it no mind and reviewed a jotted list of questions I hoped to ask. But after a moment, it was like ignoring a tornado flinging parked cars. 'We will f**k him. Do you hear me? We will f**k him. We will ruin him. Like no one has ever f**ked him!'

Did anyone else see Howard Dean's appearance on Jay Leno Wednesday night?....I thought his charisma and "shoot from the hip" style was readily apparent....even though Leno wasn't exactly asking him tough questions about any important issues (I was waiting for Jay to bring up the civil union ruling in Vermont, which of course he never did) but Dean did effectively handle the "bad temper" question with his humorous comeback.

I thought it was interesting that the NBC audience in SoCal (which I'm sure includes a lot of tourists visiting from elsewhere in the country) didn't appear to greet him very warmly when he was first introduced but after being exposed to Howard's personality, albeit briefly, and listening to his stories about his old $125 suit from JC Penney and his transition from wall street broker to physician to governor the audience response seemed to noticeably improve....they seemed to react almost as if this was an unknown politician who they had never heard of before but after listening to him speak for 10 minutes or so, their interest (and potential support) for Dean appeared to significantly change -- hopefully this nationwide exposure (I dare say this was probably the largest audience that had an opportunity to listen to him since he declared his candidacy) will have a similar positive effect upon Howard's fundraising and name recognition in "small town" America and will cause many Americans to delve deeper in order to see where he stands on a number of crucial issues.
mdphl
I also thought the bit with him playing the guitar on the street and begging for money was very funny. Overall, very good performance. I also noted with interest how Dean touched upon the fiscal conservative themes.
hockeyTom
I missed this, but was reading a story about Dean on the web yesterday, and indeed he is very humble. Rather than fly around the country in a lear jet, Howard uses Southwest or Jet Blue airlines, and he doesn't buy expensive or fancy clothes. He is very basic. My kind of candidate!
hockeyTom
I just checked Deans website, and a big fat congratulations are in order here. At last count Dean's supporters raised more than $14.8 million dollars twoards his campiagn war chest. This beats any other Dem. by a mile. Well done everybody!!!

Hia puckman!
Are you going to a meet up tonight?
One other point I would like to make is the donations were for the most part small ones, given by lots of people.

P2: no, unfortunately I will not be able to make it to meetup tonight. And you are right about Dean contributions. The average contribution to the Dean camp is $58!!, and to date he has recieved these contributions from about 180,000 people..does anyone else feel like he is kind of doing what Clinton did early on? By that I mean making guest appearances on tv shows, and late night talk shows. I think this is great, and people who haven't been exposed to him, can get a good feel for him from these types of appearances.
Cadillac
I'm leading the meet - up in Inverness, FL (strike up the banjo). Taped Leno last night, plan on watching it tonight after the meet-up.

Anyone else go to the house party Monday night?

I gave my contribution....

GO DEAN!!

This exact point was brought up last night during his appearance on Jay Leno....Howard stated the objective of his campaign from day one was to raise $82 from each supporter (as opposed to the $2000 contributions that the Republicans ask for and expect, as he noted), which is precisely the course of action that he has taken....in fact, I chuckled a bit when he said their goal was to raise $82 each from 1 MILLION Americans -- $82M in contributions from the "average citizen"?....now you're talking!

As I mentioned earlier, Dean came across as very impressive and down-to-earth last night....I don't see how that appearance can do anything else BUT help his campaign (especially if the current administration keeps shooting themselves in the foot with more scandals and lies surfacing on a daily basis). rolleyes.gif

Guest Blogger Chris Cooper: Celebrate National Coming Out Day
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) supporters of Howard Dean have been organizing in force with Out for Dean, a grassroots organization of LGBT supporters with groups in 28 cities nationwide and new groups starting everyday.

Support for Howard Dean among the LGBT community is deep and growing. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force surveyed over 1,000 people at Pride events in three major metropolitan areas and found that LGBT voters favored Dean 3-to-1 over his closest rival, Senator John Kerry (see the full report at www.outfordean.com).

Now, Out for Dean is organizing National Coming Out Day House Parties across the country on October 11th. Out for Dean groups nationwide will meet to celebrate the progress our community has made and to support a presidential candidate who will work for LGBT equality.

Join the celebration! Visit www.outfordean.com to learn how you can host or attend a house party in your area. Sign up for Out for Dean groups in a city near you. Find out more about celebrity honorary house party hosts. Watch for the release of “This is Howard’s House” – a CD of house music inspired by the Dean for America campaign. And above all…spread the word about how we are taking back our country for all Americans!

Great link, P2! It's what many people have said from the get-go about W. If his policies keep gutting the manufacturing base in the Midwest, he'll be lucky to win any of the states beyond Indiana!

GO HOWARD DEAN!

Seattle Dean alert. He will be back there tomorrow, you lucky people. I only wish he were coming back to Spokane. I think he will soon.

Great link P2. Dean is planning an event here in Philly in the Fall -- I will be attending a breakfast on Thursday morning where we will learn the details.
hockeyTom
That story really lays it on the line doesn't it?? I mean the contrast between the two is just glaring. Go Howard!

Update regarding the rally mentioned above.
Reports are that the crowd numbered up to 5,000 people! The Republicans protested the rally and had a best anti Dean contest...the winner was Dean is a queen.
The amount of food brought in was also great, reports are that the donation area was overflowing!
BTW this was one of the Generation Dean events to build support on campus....

The other day I noticed that Dean has written a book, something to the effect of "Taking back America", which should be out very soon. I look forward to adding this to my library. Go Howard.

I am not worried about it.

Caught Dean yesterday on CNN's Wolf Blitzer. He was talking about the recall vote in California. He said he believes the effort is being pushed by the far right wing, and thats its a bad idea.

puckman, sit tight....there maybe some news regarding this, I wonder if the name Ken Lay rings a bell?

STATEMENT FROM HOWARD DEAN ON THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF MATTHEW SHEPARD'S DEATH

"Five years ago this Sunday, Matthew Shepard died after he was beaten, tied to a
fence, and left to die in the Laramie, Wyoming countryside simply for being gay.
And despite the spotlight that his death shone on the hate that members of the
LGBT community must face every day, we are no closer to the passage of a
national hate crimes bill that includes sexual orientation, gender, and
disability. Nor has anti-gay violence come to an end, as evidenced most
painfully by the recent murder of Sakia Gunn in Newark, New Jersey.

"I agree wholeheartedly with a statement made by Matthew's mother, Judy Shepard,
at a rally in front of the U.S. Capitol earlier this year: 'It is unbelievable
that in this day and age, in this country, our national leaders have not come
together to pass a common-sense law to combat hate crimes in this country.' I
call upon President Bush and every member of Congress to put aside partisan
bickering for just one day and pass this desperately needed legislation

That's the most supportive and compassionate statement about our community that I've ever heard ANY politician make, let alone one running for the Presidency....Thank you Howard!!....let's only hope his momentum continues to build over the next 13 months.

I was at Arizona State University on Friday. The campus was plastered with Dean posters. He spoke there the day before (the same day as the debate) drawing more than 2,000 students. I doubt that Joe Leiberman, John Edwards or Dick Gephardt could draw a few hundred people.

I watched the debate on replay. I thought Gephardt was very strong. Clark looked like a deer in headlights. I don't think that Dean's performance was up to par. It is clear that, as the frontrunner, he is walking a fine line between trying to look "Presidential" and obvioulsy wanting to respond aggressively to the attacks.

All in all, he is holding his own and is well on his way to seriously competing for the nomination.

I'm part of the planning team for a major event here in Philly on December 9. Go Howard!!

My feelings and beliefs in Dean got even stronger and were enforced even more by watching "This Week" with George S. The very first subject was the condition of our healthcare crisis, and they were talking about the possibility of getting prescription drug coverage for Medicare, something I need and believe is of the utmost importance. George cited a new ABC poll which asked Americans first what kind of health care would you prefer? The majority answer was Universal coverage. And they also asked Americans are you more satisfied now, or less satisfied now with the current state of U.S. health care. By far, the largest majority said they were dissatisfed. More proof that we need Howard now more than ever. The Dr. is in!!!
hockeyTom
For those of you who say the Dems have no plans and are only attacking Bush all the time, now you should go to Deans website. His economic plans are there, and are impressive. To start with he proposes a $100 Billion fund to restore the economy in the U.S., which will create 1 million jobs in the first year. The meat is now on the table!!! There is to much info to post. Go to Howards website to check it out:
Howard!

Leiberman and Clark announced that they are not competing in Iowa. For obvious reasons -- Leiberman has no traction. Clark is being bombarded with questions regarding the tapes of his remarks praising George Bush.

How do you think these developments will affect Dean?
hockeyTom
positively, for sure! I see alot of issues suddenly in the forefront, that Howard has been talking about for a long time. wink
hockeyTom
Anybody else catch Dean being interviewed by Dan Rather last night on "60 Minutes-2"?? I just happened to be flipping channels. This was a great interview. I thought Dean came across as brilliant, very friendly, and very focus. There were alot of smiles from Dean. I think he has a great personality. Lots of insight into his background, and campaign, and why he is where he is at today. They also used some brief footage shots from when he was in Spokane in August too.
I guess most of the people who work at his campaign office are no older then 30, and very very computer saavy. Hence, the reasons why a big part of his campaign thrust is from the internet and how brilliantly it is being used by Dean. I thought he answered some tough questions extremely well.
gmginsfo
Puckman, I thought slow-pitch softball season had ended until I saw that "interview." I found it hard not to laugh when I thought of how Rather presumed to lecture the first President Bush while he was in office in a much more confrontational White House interview and compared Rather's patronizing sycophancy with Dean to that earlier event. The LA Times just demonstrated in California how well that approach works and I see that CBS hasn't learned a thing from it. Fine with me - four more years, W Baby!
hockeyTom
I am not sure I follow your take, but if you are underestimating Dean I would not, and as a supporter of him I don't plan on any more years of Shrub at all! wink

Some good polling news tucked away at the end of this Newsweek story:

QUOTE
Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean now ranks among the Democratic Party’s 2004 presidential candidates, taking the lead from retired General Wesley Clark. Dean now polls at 15 percent among registered Democrats and Democratic leaners, trailed by Clark (12 percent), Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman (10 percent), Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry (8 percent), Missouri Rep. Dick Gephardt (8 percent) and the Rev. Al Sharpton (8 percent). The other Democratic nominees each have 6 percent or less of votes.
While Bush still leads in the polls against every one of the Democratic candidates, the gap between Bush and Dean has grown markedly tighter in recent weeks, from a 14 percent gap (52 percent vs. 38 percent) at the end of September, to a 6 percent gap (49 percent vs. 43 percent) in the latest poll. Clark fares identically against Bush, with a 6 percent gap (49 percent vs. 43 percent), while Lieberman, Kerry and Gephardt have slightly wider gaps (7, 8 and 9 percent, respectively).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the Newsweek Poll, Princeton Survey Research Associates interviewed by telephone 1,007 adults aged 18 and older on October 23 and 24. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
I am very surprised that Kerry's support is so low, but I'm glad to see Dean is still chugging along like the little engine that could.

Newsweek Story \"Out of Balance\"

I am thinking about going to my first meet-up, but have to admit I find it a little odd - what exactly is the point of these things - it feels kind of cultish - so if any of the more ardent Dean supporters on the board can allay my qualms - I'd like to hear it.
hockeyTom
The purpose of these meet ups is first to mingle with and share ideas with other Dean supporters in your area. Lots of plans and strategy come from these meetings. Its momentum building, and it works! wink
MIB
NPR host Juan Williams: "The Democrats are scared to death of Howard Dean. They will attempt to rally around anybody but Dean, and you will see every attempt by the party to make sure he is not the nominee."

Interesting.
hockeyTom
Thats already the scuttle that a few people have suggested, I think including yourself, correct me if I am wrong. I remember in the interview with Dan Rather Dean was asked about the Clintons and specifically if he had heard from Bill Clinton, which he said he had not. I can understand why the rest of the Dems. are scared of Dean, because he is setting the tone right now for the rest of the candidates, and his organizational skills are excellent.
MIB
puck, I reported it NOT because I hate Dean or something--I don't. I may never vote for him, but I admire his ability, his guts, to often tell it like it is and disregard the regular system, so to speak. I say the same thing about certain Republicans, too.

In Illinois, a Republican who speaks his mind like Dean does his; a Republican who doesn't always toe the "company line," so to speak, is treated like a pariah. He is outcast by the good ole boy party mentality and treated like dirt.

I believe Dean will fall victim to this eventually. Too many entrenched Dems will do everything they can to make sure he is not the nominee come the convention next summer. You see, Dean isn't one of the good ole boys of the Democratic Party, and that's not good for him.

That has always been my biggest complaint about the two parties--they don't recognize or reward someone with principles or guts. Instead, they want someone who's among the "in" crowd.

MIB: I hear you an dwhat you are saying very loud and clear, and I agree with you that its convienient for the other Dems. who are on th einside to want to attack dean because he is the "outsider", but in my instance and I feel alot of others, this is exactly why we want Dean to win. I am tired of hearing about the so called inside the beltway politics. In mine and I hope alot of other peoples minds this country is moving in the wrong direction and Dean represents our best hope. I would also agree with you that in a sense we get what we deserve with an entrenched two party system. Even though I am a proud rather liberal Democrat I would welcome a strong voice or two from say some independant, and hear what they would have to offer, but the American public doesn't seem to want this so we are stuck in the short term with two parties.
