MIB
QUOTE
fantomas:
First, it's a myth that big media are liberal; check out Eric Alterman's and Mark Crispin Miller's recent books on this subject. They're very informative and well-researched (as oppose to being cris de coeur, like Ann whatever-her-name's works of fiction).
First of all, I personally think Coulter's nuts. I've never read a word that she--or her same ilk--have written.

Secondly, it's no myth. Sure, there are bound to be the occasional publication or news source that leans to the right, but when every major news magazine, every major newspaper, and every major television network (whether FOX is a network is debatable) is pro-insert the Democrat's name here, and over 90% of people working for said organizations votes for Democrats, well, if that ain't liberal, NOTHING is.

Wake up, fantomas. It never ceases to amaze me why once, just once, liberals won't admit their own media is with them. If I were a left-winger, I'd be ecstatic that the media was also left-wing.

I hate to interrupt your opinion with facts but in the 2000 election Bush was endorsed by 138 major newspapers, Gore by 52. Is that your idea of a left-wing media?

Suuuure, that's why both major newsweeklies have "What's wrong with Dean?" cover stories this week. (And most Democrats, for the billionth time, aren't liberals. e.g. Dean)

It's fair to say most media professionals are Democrats, and most media owners are Republicans. Jeepers, I wonder who's more influential?

And don't forget all the right wing radio programs too!

re: "First of all, I personally think Coulter's nuts. I've never read a word that she--or her same ilk--have written."

Then what are basing your opinion on? Her TV appearances? She's a writer by profession--she wouldn't be on TV if it weren't for her written work. Surely you'd have to read something she wrote before determining she's nuts.
MIB
One has only to listen to her to realize she's definitely two tacos short of a combination plate.

She's a pundit, not a writer. Before that, she was an attorney. Writing a book does not automatically promote you to a man (or woman) of letters. Admittedly her most recognized statements have come in written form, but simply put, she has a shtick that she promotes in several media. MIB could have very easily experienced the insanity of Ann on her radio, television, or other appearances. Or, perhaps, he read the titles of any of her tomes and decided that they were a bit inflamatory for seriously consideration. Or, even, he read the many well-respected conservative pundits (some of whom also write) who have publically and pointedly distanced themselves from Ann.

While I personally have subjected to myself to Ann's writings (which, to quote Al Frankin, "last appeared on the prestigious internet"), I don't think everyone has to have dived into her ouevre to understand that she makes Michael Jackson look normal.

There's a nice article about Dean in this week's New Yorker. As with most things in the New Yorker, it is quite indepth and very balanced. It talks about his growth on the civil unions issue and on the death penalty and other hot-button issues.

I also enjoyed this line from the same article.

QUOTE
After the capture of Saddam Hussein, George Bush made clearer than ever his Manichaen-messianic world view: \"I believe ... I truly believe ... that freedom is the Almighty's gift to every person -- every man and woman who lives in this world. That's what I believe. And the arrest of Saddam Hussein changed the equation in Iraq. Justice was being delivered to a man who defied that gift from the Almighty to the people of Iraq.\" Which was to say that the formalities and codified proedures of the new Iraq's criminal-justice system might be all well and good, but Old Testament justice, through the agency of an American-prosecuted preemptive war, was far more satisfying.

Yes, it sounds very balanced.
araanib
Balanced about Dean, I meant. It doesn't throw around over-qualified Bush-praise just to appear balanced overall. That would be silly.
MIB
"Iowa Caucuses are a waste of time."
-- Howard Dean (2000)

Interesting that he now has to backtrack from those statements, and many others, in light of the hundreds of video tapes found in a Montreal public affairs television office. NBC News Thursday reported they obtained exclusive access to these tapes and they reported several excerpts, many from which the Dean campaign has been busy backpeddling.
hockeyTom
The timing of the release and airing of these tapes is very suspicous. Probably Lieberman, since he is wasting so much energy attacking Dean. wink
MIB
Had it been FOX News that released it, all video tapes would have been instantly discredited and the Right accused of politicking somehow. Instead, NBC News gets them--and there sure were a lot of 'em--and the credibility is not questioned (yet).

Oh! The hypocrisy! rolleyes.gif

I'm so ashamed to admit this, but I ... find him attractive.
Skiguy
Definitely...he was hot when younger.

Now he's just hot-headed.

Other people in presidential politics I find hot:
John Edwards & John McCain (in his jet pilot days)

Yes.
MIB
So, Mrs. Howard Dean doesn't support her husband for president? Well, ain't this a hoot! Why not, Mrs. Dean?

Where is she? Why doesn't she campaign with her husband? Just why does she not support his campaign? With what does she disagree? What is she hiding?

Seems Mrs. Dean and the family opt to stay home rather than campaign with him. Some support.

Oh, wait. This would be the conclusion if it were a Republican campaigning. Silly me. I forgot.

Oh! The hypocrisy! rolleyes.gif
SoFlaSpartan
There was a story done on her tonight. She hasn't hit the campaign trail because she's busy. She's practicing medicine. It's what she did when her husband was governor. It's what she's doing now. Nothing hypocritical, or inconsistent, about that.
MIB
Uh huh. Whatever you say. It's obvious her absence reveals something significant. What is she hiding? Why doesn't she fully support her husband for president?

Dammit! Never mind. I forgot--again--that such thinking only applies if it were, say, Mrs. Bush being absent.

BTW, why is it no one here seems to be able to grasp sarcasm? rolleyes.gif

Considering that those on the Left generally don't have much in the way of a sense of humor, I don't think so. I'd suggest they loosen up those panties a bit.

In other news Carol Mosely Braun has resigned from her race, and will support Howard Dean, as well as former Gov. of Texas, Anne Richards whom I worship, and credit her initally as being the one who turned me on to Howard. He just keeps on rolling along....Go Howard Go!

No, no, no, we right-wingers would say that the goddam lightbulb needs to quit depending on others for handouts and screw itself into the socket.

The traditional, non-nutso republican would expect self sufficiency.
However, you guys on the fringe far right would pray and wait for God, in his wisdom, to come and change the light bulb. at some point you guys then change the bulb. But immediately trumpet to the public that The Lord has chosen you above all else to be "the bulb changer"

and to MIB.. not a criticism but a shared observation.

It's hard to convey sarcasm in written form as the inflection and tone of voice are absent. Many times, I post things in jest and people mis-perceive.
Without little symbols and the like, the reader assumes you to be serious in your posts.

No, Lefties can laugh at ourselves; it's the repressed and repressive Right, with their inability to take criticism without getting hysterical (or even for a moment reflexive) or laugh at themselves that's the problem. And liberals usually do have their pants down, and admit it way too easily--that's why they're so often in trouble. They want everyone to get some...the Right wants to keep it all to themselves, preferably behind closed doors (and iron gates)....

This amuses me.

meanwhile... turning to something more substantive and relevant to Howard Dean for a sec.

Why was it relevant that Sharpton pressed Dean about the lack of blacks in the cabinet of Governor Dean?

I mean.... in a state with... what? .. 98% white population you can not expect the same kind of representation as in a place like NYC.

I mean... Sharpton had no credibility with me. But this line of questioning was just pointless.

I wish that Dr.Dean hadn't been so polite in his reply. He just should have said, "What the hell are you talking about Al? The state of Vermont is almost completely white. Are you gonna criticize the leader of China for not having a black or brown minister in Beijing?"
hockeyTom
ung, I hear exactly what you are saying. I like Rev. Sharpton. Few people Repubs. or Dems. are as sharp and sharp witted as he is, but I call it playing the race card. Sharpton knows he has little if any chance of getting the nomination, so why not throw this out? Its kind of pointless, if you ask me.

'Mercan politicians I consider hot.

1 Senator McCain. Very hot in his pilot days, and STILL boinkable.

2 Howard Dean. Same reasons as McCain.

3 And the WINNER, and MOST BOINKABLE.

General Clark. That man makes my butt twitch.

But. Getting serious. I don't understand something about US politics. The right wing, even when they weren't in power, were extremely well organized, and ran like a well oiled machine. They are doing the same thing now, but against the democrats.

Why is the Democratic party constantly shooting itself in the foot. Is it the fault of the leadership, candidates, or the make up of the party.

I mean, from where I stand, if they don't get their shit together, we're (and I include Canada in this) gonna be stuck with Shrub for another 4 years.

Right.... well.. I was being funny. You didn't get the humour? pity.

anyway, William... let it go girl. we've moved onto different subject matter.

speaking of which... I met both Sen.McCain, Dr.Dean and Gen. Clark.
While they all may have been hot in their salad days, Dean looks the best of all three today.

Like I said, McCain was a major hottie. Look at the jacket pic of his book. and When I met Clark several months ago, I was struck by how different he is in person. He is shorter than one expects and not as buff as he seems on TV.

Dean was and still is a major hottie.

Leftists don't laugh at themselves, unless they can blame those on the Right before doing so.

I do agree with your basic direction insofar as too many folks don't laugh at themselves. I do all the time, for I do not believe I have any right to poke fun at others unless I am willing to poke fun at myself first.

Besides, life's too short to be so sourpussed and without a sense of humor. Man is an interesting being, and people are quite frequently just plain goofy, and I, for one, think that's what makes life so enjoyable in the long run.

Except that when they're in power, they have no frickin' clue how to wield it. Democrats at least know how to be in effective control.

It just keeps on coming...

Psycho Dean threatens ABC News. ABC News on Wednesday reported that Dean ignored repeated claims that his security chief beat his wife. When Dean heard about the ABC report, he threatened them with expulsion from the campaign and a total blackout to all ABC personnel and media if they ran with the report.

A bit sensitive, eh?

And, is Bill Clinton pissed at Howard Dean?
