I came across this while reading the headlines for the day here in LA-LA-land. Imagine to my surprise just what I came across here in the Los Angeles Times. Ex-gays are seeking equal time to gay and lesbian activists here in California and they're suing to be included, according to this article. Here's a snippet paragraph from the story:

Alan Chambers, a leading ex-gay activist, recalls how scared and depressed he felt when a high-school counselor advised him to deal with his attraction to other boys by accepting his homosexuality. He had no choice, she told him: He was gay. "It was very damaging," Chambers said. "I didn't want that. I hadn't chosen it."

As I was reading this, I got somewhat hot under the collar. Now, I think Mr. Chambers is in complete denial about accepting who he truly is and loves covering it up with who he wants to be. I'm glad that I was encouraged by my close friends to accept who I am. It's a shame not everyone feels the same.

I had the misfortune of reading that little byline as I scanned the front page yesterday evening, too. I didn't read the article, I wanted to digest my dinner without Rolaids.

Just seeing the byline brought back unpleasant memories of editorial battles with those Homosexuals Anonymous jackasses back in Tulsa.

Excuse me while I go find some antacid.

I frequently check out Ex-gay Watch, a blog all about the "ex-gay" movement and its continuing attempts to get into the schools under the guise of diversity (sorry, if you're "ex-gay" that means your straight, so how do you provide a different "viewpoint"). The site has all kinds of postings on the dubious "science" promoted by the "ex-gay" movement, the fluctuating numbers of alleged "ex-gays" (depending on the day and the speaker, it can be between a few thousand and hundreds of thousands), and the sometimes vicious rhetoric used by these people.

The "ex-gays" different from the "straights" in that ex-gays feel (or felt) attraction to the same sex but have either conquered it or piled it down under heaps of denial (depending on your point of view). As far as they're concerned, telling those who have homosexual feelings that they should "accept it" is denying them another option. As far as I'm concerned, it's like telling someone whose nose in a quarter-inch off-center that yes! there IS another option! You don't have to accept it!

The only way I got through that article was with a very strong cup of Italian Roast coffee. I may have misunderstood their point, but it sounds like they are not necessarily "converting" the gays into being straight, but teaching (or brainwashing) the gays into repressing their feelings for men (or women). It sounds like a recipe for disaster when these men start to give in to their "urges" and leave the wife and kids behind.
