OK, this one is just really dumb if you ask me. I'm all for minority hiring, but he's suggesting to change competitive balance (surrendering or offering "bonus" draft picks) to have more black coaches?

Cochran threatens to sue NFL

And on top of that, manipulating stats to further his point! Of course there is a smaller sample of minority coaches to calculate these stats, so you have to include that in the argument.

I know... let's say there aren't enough coaches named Gruden in the NFL, so we need to encourage teams to hire them because they have better winning percentages!

from the article:

[quote]But Cochran noted there have been only five black head coaches since 1986 -- Art Shell, Dennis Green, Tony Dungy, Ray Rhodes and Herman Edwards. Only Indianapolis' Dungy and Edwards of the New York Jets are currently employed as head coaches.

Ray Rhodes started well with the Eagles and then ran the team into the ground. He deserved to be fired. And I wasn't overly impressed with Dennis Green. I've read a lot of articles wondering why Art Shell doesn't get more offers.

As for Johnnie Cochran...doesn't he have some murderers to keep out of jail?

The problem has to begin to be dealt with at the lower levels, namely Division 1 college football. The fact that ther are only 4 black head coaches out of something like 120 programs is disgraceful. And the percentage of assistant coaches at the college level isn't much higher. I don't agree with much that comes out of Cochran's mouth, but he's got a real point here.
