Bush Economic Aide Hubbard Resigns

By Adam Entous

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Glenn Hubbard resigned as chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers and Harvard University's Gregory Mankiw, a veteran of the Reagan administration, has been chosen to replace him, the White House announced on Wednesday.

Hubbard's abrupt departure is the latest in a series of dramatic shifts in President Bush's economic team following last year's rapid-fire resignations of Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill, White House economic aide Lawrence Lindsey and Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Harvey Pitt.

Was anyone surprised by this? Hubbard had previously written in a textbook on the dangers of incurring huge deficits, yet went along with what is obviously a very bad plan.

I think he couldn't take it any longer. Abstracting on economics as a tenured prof at Columbia is a lot more fun than trying to justify a nightmare by twisting figures and statements. How long will Harvard's Mankiw--supposedly a boy genius--put up with this before he realizes how sullied his reputation is going to be and splits too?
