This article is both chilling and somewhat funny. I actually cannot believe that the writer was *that* surprised. What United States does he live in?

My Dinner at Applebees with White Supremacists

It gets better. The founder of the organization wrote a whopper of a book that's an awesome detailed blueprint for race war and is credited with inspiring young Timothy McVeigh to bomb the Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Hurrah for hate!

Since this group is not known for displaying a great sense of humor, and in order to protect the innocent (namely me), I won't use the hate group's name. I really wouldn't enjoy it if the next time one of them saw me, it was through the scope of a rifle.
That's the National Alliance group in Hillsboro, West Virginia. They imploded after \"The Turner Diaries\" author William Pierce died a few years back. Kevin Alfred Strom was running it for a while. His amateur radio callsign is WB4AIO, and according to the ARRL, he still lives in Earlysville, Virginia, the same town where Sen. George Allen lives. I used to live there too, but I don't believe I ever ran into Kevin Alfred Strom.

QUOTE
The local leader of the hate group -- an organization that is a direct spinoff from the old American Nazi Party....
The American Nazi Party had its headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. It was run by George Lincoln Rockwell, who was gunned down in front of a laundromat in the 6000 block of Wilson Boulevard on August 25, 1967. There is a killer skatepark, Powhatan Springs Skate Park, at that location now.

Skateboarding at Powhatan Springs...

is not a crime.

The Nazis had their barracks, actually a group home, up the street from where the skatepark is now located. The site of their group home is now Upton Hill Regional Park, which has a batting cage.

QUOTE
The local unit has been around since 1993, and white supremacist Kevin has been along for the hatemongering ride since the beginning, working his way up the ranks. They have a weekly broadcast on shortwave radio.

I'm surprised this hasn't gotten that much media attention. In Chicago, a judge and mother were found murdered and it is believe to be by a white supremacist group. Currently the group's leader is in jail for a plot to kill the Judge after a ruling was made against him.

I wonder if the white supremacists who are responsible for killing Judge Lefkow's husband and mother in law will be prosecuted under the Patriot Act. I can think of few groups more threatening to the integrity of the US than white supremacist groups.

Good question. It would seem odd if the act only applied to groups/individuals outside the USA or non-citizens. I also wonder if the atmosphere in this country has changed such that these groups feel more emboldened, or whether they are taking a cue from foreign terrorists who tend to go after anyone close to a target that is protected.

A few years ago, during the whole Sally Hemmings/Thomas Jefferson controversy, the Washington Post did a story on mixed race people in the US and the Hemmings descendents who were linked to the Jefferson family. Turns out the Hemmings descendents were typical Upper Midwest Scandanavians, who had no idea they had African ancestors. Because Hemmings had been the product of a white slaveowner (Jefferson's father-in-law) and one of his slaves, her children were only 1/4 African descent, and the son who founded this branch of the family had evidently "passed" as white after being freed. The Post went on to state that something like 80% of Americans are of mixed ancestry, if you count Native Americans as a different "race."

I have to wonder how many of these white supremacists are actually of mixed race and don't know it. One of the only positive results of the idea of slavery reparations, IMHO, would be the potential benefit to so many people of identifying their own slave ancestors, and perhaps a realization that our "racial" classifications are a bunch of bunk.

Wasn't their "hero", Adolph Hitler, found to be part Jewish? It certainly makes one wonder about these hate groups.

When working at a plastics plant, a white supremist started talking to me. I had no idea he was a devote racist. I quickly found out as he started bashing Mexicans, Africans, the usual non-whites. The conversation was just him talking to me. When he paused for me to speak and affirm his beliefs, I spoke Spanish. He never talked to me again after I stopped speaking. Priceless.

For all other things there's Racecard.

Uh, no, though this rumor about ADOLF persists.

BTW, given how we're in a "war on terror,"

1) has W condemned the actions against this judge? Or did I miss his forcefully condemning the sort of DOMESTIC TERROR that led to the worst act of domestic US mass-killing in the 20th century?

2) given how right-wing advocates like Gary Bauer and others have repeatedly condemned our federal judges (as the Nazis and right-wingers did in Weimer Germany), will they now be charged for inciting violence and terror against members of the court, government officials? Yeah, cheers, I thought not.

Good points Fantomas. Funny how GWB is selective in his hunt for terrorists. The latest update on this Hale idiot is that he was trying to pass some sort of cryptic note to his mother for her to pass on to his skinhead idiot friends. Now they won't let Hale's parents visit, and his mommy is now upset that her son's First Amendment rights are being violated. Boo hoo, maybe if sonny didn't try killing a federal judge, his rights would be intact. Cry me a river.

This just in. Looks like the judge's family may have been the victim of a guy unhappy about losing a medical malpractice suit.

This doesn't detract from the importance of the case or the nature of white supremacists but, on the contrary, makes it more important to be concerned about the health of our legal system.

Malpractice is another target of the Bush agenda.

FT, President Bush immediately and strongly comdemned the murders the day after they were discovered. So yes, you must've missed this one (too). I recommend WGN 9 p.m. news for the most complete coverage.

And the FBI is investigating this matter thoroughly, as it does all such cases, since federal judges are entrusted to its and the US Marshals' care. FNC's coverage of these murders has been pretty thorough too, if you can't handle WGN's. As Sportinlife notes in his update, contrary to the earlier speculations of others, this does not appear to be turning out the way many hoped it would. Finally, the time for filing charges has hardly begun, though they surely will be once the proper case has been built, even if the non-crimes you mentioned won't be among them.* You really ought to have more faith in our legal system!

Let's just say that it's healthy to approach the judicial system with a hermeneutics of suspicion.

At any rate, white supremacist organizations need to be watched very carefully by the government. When people worry about threats to the nation, they tend to look at someone who doesn't look like "them." However, it's the enemy within who's the bigger threat. I don't think we should be dismissive of these groups just yet. I think they're just biding their time in the hopes that others will see their point of view. Fear is their ally.

What? Don't you be goin' mercurial on me now! eek!

White, black, Aryan, African, Supremacist of whatever stripe - ANY group that engages in violence to accomplish its ends merits strict scrutiny by law enforcement and the courts.

I watched WGN and saw no mention of W's condemnation. If he did, good. I do recall that when they caught that white supremacist with a huge cache of weapons and a plan to poison water systems down in Texas last year (or was it two years ago), his then Attorney General, who had been braying about "terror," was silent. But since you're such an adherent of W's, I'll trust your statement that he spoke out.

Funny how only WGN-TV covered that aspect of President Bush speaking out about the murders. Amazing that CBS Ch. 2, NBC 5, ABC 7 and Fox 32 missed that huge aspect of the story. Also, I really don't recall reading about it in The Chicago Tribune, The Chicago Sun Times, The Times of Northwest Indiana, or The Post Tribune of Northwest Indiana. I read those papers daily, but I only watch ABC 7. I also don't recall hearing about that aspect of the story on WBBM-AM Newsradio 780. When did you see or hear about Bush coming out against the murders? All of the local media outlets did extensive coverage of this story, and WGN-TV was the only one to cover Bush's comments? I find that hard to believe.
