I didn't know where to put this thread but I guess it fits here in Politics & Religion.

Spain outlaws all P2P file sharing:
Article

Read the part about the extra tax on most forms of digital media such as blank CDs, DVDs, flash drives and even mobile phones.

Could this happen in the United States?

I would imagine this would be similar to what has gone on in the United States with companies suing people for illegally downloading songs.....but it will instead be the government doing it?

Seems like it would require QUITE an effort to realistically cut out file sharing.

In the U.S. I would seriously doubt that lawmakers would ever do anything about this. It's only something that would happen in the courts.....and even then as we have seen, it's rarely ever enforced.

It seems something like this would squelch the technology flow. I guess since Spain is such a small country in comparison they might be able to lock down the Internet for their citizens. I guess the Internet freedom will come with a few locks.

What about the people that will use the blank media for legitimate reasons. They will be taxed too. I guess there will be no way to tell if you are using the blank media for good or bad. Hmmmm.... strange.
