I think these
US Bureau of census data up to 2000 highlight the
lack of voting participation in the US. Of especial interest is the top reason given for registered voters not voting: "too busy". If the economy causes people to have to work more to keep up, they should be able to vote without losing their job. I don't think most new voters are going to stick around if the process is not reformed soon.

Maybe we need more polling places and voting machines to quicken the process up some. I know in Alabama there is enough time to vote before a person goes to work, if the person takes leave, or after work. Yes, there were long lines, but I don't think that reflects a problem with the process-just a problem with the preparation.
Contact your local or state election officer and ask them for more voting machines and to see if they can supply more volunteers to man the polling places on the next election day.
I really don't see a problem with the US voting system. We tend to only think about it on election day, but it takes a lot of money and man power to run a proper election process.
