Nice going, coach...sheesh. rolleyes.gif
QUOTE
\"You've got to keep an eye on those two, because they're going to try to get the upper hand,\" Parcells said about quarterbacks coach Sean Payton and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. \"Mike wants the defense to do well, and Sean, he's going to have a few ... no disrespect for the Orientals, but what we call Jap plays. OK. Surprise things.\"

After a murmur in the room of reporters, which included a Japanese journalist, Parcells repeated, \"No disrespect to anyone.\"

If you have to preface a comment "no disrespect meant to..." you probably shouldn't make the comment. Local radio host and sports columninst Randy Galloway was particularly hard on Parcells on this issue, not criticising the actual comment, but the stupidity of making it when he knew it was a hot potato.

Dale Hansen (local sportscaster) was amused at what appeared to him like Parcells was reaching out to take that statement back after the pause and 2nd "no disrespect to anyone". He knew he blew it as soon as he said it, even after trying to preface the remark.

I was on another board and there were a LOT of folks who were shocked and unaware that the term "oriental" is no longer on the PC list. All but the very young were up on the term "jap".

I guess the Tuna can now use this against the press to cut them off from interviews. Hope not, he's usually pretty entertaining without the gaffs.

I suspect this will be considered offensive by Asians in general. My experience is that the public reaction will be humility and "politically cool" but the inner one will be seething and long-term.

The answer to the question at the end of Jock Talk

We're wondering what \"Oriental\" Cowboy Dat Nguyen thinks of the comments . . .
will probably be gentlemanly in public but the damage inside may be deep and unrevealed.

Yes. But in the same sense that using the N word would also offend me even though I'm not black.

Parcells does a bit of history of using offensive--or at least questionable--language. A couple of years back, he used "she" to describe a male (questioning manhood??) and now this. Especially since he prefaced his comments with "no disrepect for the Orientals" & then repeated "No disrepect to anyone," he clearly knew some would be offended by the comments. He could easily have made his point about Sean Payton by merely saying Payton was going to implement "tricky, surprise plays."

Often these types of comments seem to be cases of people speaking without having their brains in gear, but the "no disrepect" aside indicate Parcells did think about it & that makes it worse.

If Parcells said, "...what we call Jap plays," then my question is, Is "Jap plays" a commonly used term for "trick plays" that "we" (football people) use, or is this a new term coined by Parcells himself?

And couldn't he use a more contemporary slur? I mean, the last time "Jap" was in the vernacular was WWII.

And again the billiant "I apologize to anyone who may have been offended." This really isn't remorse. It's more like pity.
PCC
Joe Gibbs would never say something like this. tongue.gif

No he wouldn't.

No, Gibbs will just lead the team that uses a racial slur as a mascot. wink
PhillyFan
I wonder if PCC puts the head dress on his Gibbs blow up doll?

Actually i dont think neither of them are racist, stupid yes.. racist no.
stinger85
And Andy Reid would probably say something just as stupid if he wasn't so busy stuffing his pie hole!!
PhillyFan
Sorry sting, andy wont give an accurate injury update let alone offending someone. He's a good mormon.
Joe in Philly
Andy Reid won't say anything interesting to the media, let alone offensive. As for Gibbs, the only thing I can picture is if he's preaching somewhere and goes on an anti-gay marriage tirade or something. Nothing like Parcells said.

Not sure which is worse. Oriental or Jap. I'll go with Jap. rolleyes.gif

As a child we used to say, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." when someone called us names. And in many ways I still react that way when words are thrown around inappropriately. If you can't come to terms with your history and who you are, then anything has the potential to upset, offend, hurt you. Parcell's using "oriental" and "Jap" really is an indication of where and who he is, more than being an offensive, directed slur. He doesn't know, as many people his age do not know, why 'oriental' is no longer an acceptable term (implying colonization and slavery) and "Jap" is still too common in society. Likewise, 'faggot' rarely bothers me, no matter the context. I never use the word and give it little significance when used by others. If someone in the audience was offended when he said it, why didn't they bring him to task immediately? No, they would rather have a 'story' to report. Of course bringing him to task would have been a better story, but that ain't happening.

Andy Reid is Morman?

Yes, Andy Reid is a Mormon. In one of the Eagles rally threads from last year we discussed how a local TV station and Reid's wife arranged for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to sing the Eagles' fight song. biggrin.gif

Parcell's comments obviously did not show ignorance of the power or intent of the word, but insensitivity to the hurt it might cause and to the memories that Asians might have of events in the USA in WWII. He just doesn't care very much what they think. It's like Blacks should be able to put up with racial bias in housing, lending, freedom to live where they want as long as they are not being lynched anymore. Asians who are not angry about this do not understand the nature of racism in the USA or are in denial.
