....true patriot love, in all thy sons command...

(does anyone here know French)

(No, but I found it on a website...)

The French version of "O Canada" is not a translation of the English version. It actually has a different meaning.

Anyhoo.... it's official!

USAToday: Canada legalizes same-sex marriage

arghhh, I was looking for an Inuit translation of Oh Canada for the folks in Nunavut. I do remember them doing the anthem in that language for CBC's Hockey Day in Canada in '03.

Actually, maybe they didn't....I was watching the live video feed from the stands of Le Centre Bell and the audio didn't work for some reason. But the Jumbotron definitely had the words in Inuit as well as english and french.

Official Canadian gov't website on "O Canada."

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

English translation of French version:

O Canada! Land of our forefathers
Thy brow is wreathed with a glorious garland of flowers.
As in thy arm ready to wield the sword,
So also is it ready to carry the cross.
Thy history is an epic of the most brilliant exploits.

Ch.
Thy valour steeped in faith
Will protect our homes and our rights
Will protect our homes and our rights.

There is an aboriginal version of O Canada that was done at the opening of the Calgary Olympics. Each verse was done in a different aboriginal language from across the country, including
M'ic-M'ac, Mohawk, Cree, Innu, Dene, and Haida-Gwai.

It was truly moving, and somewhere in the 200 boxes we have packed to move, is an old VHS tape of it. I'm not sure if it was ever written down, as most aboriginal languages do not have a written equivilant, so the only writing would be an English phonetic equivilant.

Interesting that the haters in Canada are now trying to hide between separation of church and state! Just what they have always and still do oppose for everyone else. They have no problem with their religion being law for the rest of us.
And of course there are no church/state issues. Quite the opposite. The haters claim that a minister could be forced to marry a same sex couple, which is absurd. Every clergyperson can decide which religious weddings to perform or not. No one forces Catholic priests to marry divorced persons or Orthodox rabbis to marry interreligious couples. The issue is what the state permits, it is clearly civil marriage.

And of course we heard no cries about church/state separation when clergy who wanted to perform same sex marriages were denied that right.

Actually, Canada has no legal separation between church and state. The gov't has always guaranteed equal access for religion, and some of the churches even ran gov't aboriginal schools for over 100 years, (and are now getting their asses sued off for ritual torture/abuse).

In the Province of Quebec, the Catholic Church literally ran the Province for over 300 years. It wasn't until the 1950's and the Duplessis regime, that control was taken out of the pulpit and given to politicians. Before that time, the church would, unofficially of course, have to approve every law before it was tabled, including budgets, where they would get their cut. Duplessis basically told the church to go to hell, and took power back. Even today in Quebec, Separate schools are non-denominational. The publically funded schools are RCC. There is a move now to remove ANY religious affiliation with every funded school in Quebec.

With religion playing such a pivotal role in Quebec for so many decades, it is ironic that Quebec is perhaps the most secular of the provinces, and the most liberal in it's thinking.

A Conservative-turned-Liberal cabinet minister is potentially the first same-sex married Member of Parliament in Canada, after his partner proposes to him.

Scott Brison, an MP from rural Nova Scotia, was also to greet Martha Stewart herself at the Windsor pumpkin regatta. (For those of you who don't know, there was some 'controversy' created when Martha announced on her show that she would not be able to attend the event because her criminal status required her to obtain a special visa for entry into Canada. This became big news in Canada, with opposition politicians claiming that preferential treatment was given to Martha when the issue was raised and her visa was expedited. Alas, fog prevented her private jet from leaving Maine and she missed the event--where she was to ride and paddle a giant pumpkin. Pumpkin Regatta. You can't make this stuff up, folks. biggrin.gif )

I hope Scott does it. I knew him in university. He is a smart and funny guy. Really look forward to the Minister's spouse accompanying him on an official visit to the US and the look on GWB's face when they are introduced.

Yeah, remember the crap Michael and Ben Novotny-Bruckner had to deal with when coming back into the US after the Liberty Ride?

Yesterday 19 awesome RC priests in Quebec stood up to their bishops and the Vatican by publishing an open letter in La Presse (Montreal) challenging the church's increasingly reactionary condemnations and political activities against their gay bretheren.

QUOTE
\"The official teaching of the church has shown itself more than once to be wrong.\"

\"Our contact with people influenced our action and way of thinking. We wish that, within the Church, Christians lend an ear to people who live their homosexual orientation. That they live with the people rather than just with books.\"

-  Quebec priests challenge same-sex stand, Globe and Mail, 2/27/06
Apparently the text of the letter isn't online, even in its original French. The most complete exerpts are on cyberpresse.ca, Priests denounce the attitude of the Church (translated into cyber-Frenglish by Google).

The CBC reports that "some priests who oppose the Vatican's position didn't sign the letter, fearing it would cause problems with their superiors." In other words, they prefer to hide in the closet rather than take a moral stand. Much more typical of gay Catholic priests -- fear before justice.
