Bush quietly meets with Amish here; they offer their prayers

QUOTE
Published: Jul 16, 2004 12:53 PM EST

LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - ... Bush met privately with a group of Old Order Amish during his visit to Lancaster County last Friday. He discussed their farms and their hats and his religion.

He asked them to vote for him in November.
....

This story has not been reported before. You might think an observant press follows the president everywhere, especially during a re-election campaign, but no reporter attended this meeting.
....

At the end of the session, Bush reportedly told the group, “I trust God speaks through me. Without that, I couldn’t do my job.’’

I see nothing wrong with a president--any president--believing that God speaks to him. I think most people of faith believe that God speaks to them in many ways.

Where the problem arises is when someone claims that God is telling him/her to do something specific on behalf of the Almighty. Such is the case with the so-called Islamic Fundamentalists, for example.
smalltownboy
To him and through him are very different things. The latter is quite a scary statement.

Who would Jesus torture?
mdphl
George W. Bush is more a religious fanatic rather than a fundamentalist. Now he thinks God speaks through him? We're really f***ed now.

Who knew God was such a crappy speaker? rolleyes.gif

Hmmm...so is God Karl Rove, Donald Rumsfeld or Dick Cheney?

NathanJones is right. That is scary.

I've never really felt that the Shrub gives a rat's ass about God or the Church. He just says and does things to kiss up to the people that got him elected and will keep him there. I think if all of us here had the political power and influence of the Religious Right, Dub would be on Queer Eye begging for a makeover.

Wasn't there a 3rd antichrist supposed to be emerging around this time? Hmmm

Shrub is too dumb to be the Antichrist. It's probably Karl Rove! We're trapped inside a USA Network made-for-TV movie!
PennState4Ever
To the extent that it matters, local broadcast media in Harrisburg reported this as "to", rather than "through".
Rob
I suppose my total distrust of Bush makes me question his true religious convictions. I just think he panders to the Religious Right because Rove, et al. tell him he needs to appease them to get re-elected. I wonder how often he attended church during his drinking days?

Probably more than he does now. tongue.gif

Don't know whether he really believes God speaks to him or through him. But I doubt seriously that he listens.

He doesn't seem to listen very well to anything that doesn't conform to his goals or preconcieved notions.

As a secular state we would not be concerned about any individuals personal communication with a spiritual being - speech and action maybe.

Bush to God:

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, Ive heard Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Whatever. Why do you hate America?
Now, watch this drive."

God should've told that to Neil Bush.

Didn't Shrub also admit, that his "mission" in life is to basically set free as many people in the world as he possibly could? I thought this came out in a book, possibly by Woodward.

Yes, they are, but the two words do rhyme, which makes what Bush "reportedly" said a bit questionable, especially since "God speaks 'to' me" just makes an awful lot more sense, from a biblical standpoint. It would be like if Bush "reportedly" said he's a "porn again Christian." Oooh, ooooh!!! Bush likes porn!!!! Hypocrite!!!! But of course any reasonable person could figure out he most likely said "born-again." (I know it's terribly unhip to be skeptical of anything that makes Bush look bad, but still.)

Who "reported" this anyway? Article says no reporter attended the meeting. Did somebody report what was said afterwards? Is there any way to check the report for accuracy? (As the Democrats hold hands and sing: "All we are saying...is give hearsay a chance!!!")

Aren't the Amish anti-war? Do the Amish even vote? They don't wear buttons, for Pete's sake. Even if they do, it's not like they're a big swing voting bloc, nor are they in any way part of some "religious right" in America. I've never thought of them as a terribly political group. Honestly I've never given the Amish much thought at all, so they might be a regular little Tammany Hall for all I know.

Of course this is the same president who told the Palestinian Authority Prime Minister in 2003, "God told me to strike at al Qaeda and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam [Hussein], which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East."

Source.

From your so-called "source":

"This is Abu Mazen's account in Arabic of what Bush said in English, written down by a note-taker in Arabic, then [translated] back into English."

Ive translated it 5 more times now and this is what I gather:
"Me likey the bombs. Osama bad. Saddam bad and try to kill daddy. Bombs go bang and boom up both. Now I good."

Maybe someone else can translate it better? I dunno smile.gif

I'd be very interested in how "G-d told me" can be translated any way but that. Unless somehow "my conscience" got translated to "Allah," I don't see how you can spin this as anything but a sitting president announcing to a foreign power that he's acting on the dictates he received in personal consultation with his diety when attacking international terrorists and sovreign nations. Either you have a problem with this or you don't, but quiblling over words and translations is mere sophistry.

And you disagree with this assessment of Mr. bin Laden? Lovely.

Perhaps one day I'll learn to blindly accept any and all criticism of President Bush without any questioning of or skepticism toward the source. Until then, this whole story sounds like crap.
