Connecticut became the first U.S. state on Wednesday to legalize civil unions for gay couples without the prodding of a court, following an overwhelming approval of the state legislature and a prompt signature by Gov. Jodi Rell.

That's three New England states now that have legalized same-sex relationships. Plus we have the World Champion Red Sox! Could there be a greater place to live in the US of A? Woo-hoo!

Those whacky liberals! Oh wait, a Republican signed the law. I wonder how long it will be before Tom DeLay's outrage attacks Governor Rell.

Great news! Now, if New York State approves gay marriages, and New Jersey gets its act together and goes beyond the "domestic partnerships"....

I have always found the eastern seaboard much more enjoyable than the Texas desert. Plus, their accents are sooo much classier than the accents Texans have. Culture, class and intelligence...no wonder I like the New England states better than the dipshits in Texas. (Bobby and the city of Austin excluded)

And me too...please don't lump myself in with the morons that surround me in this state. I'm originally from East Texas...talk about a group of people still living in 1960...wow, it's scary.

CNN's "Inside the Blogs" just mentioned that gaypatriot.org mentioned the Connecticut civil-union decision on its blog:

QUOTE
When we look at Connecticut's recognition of same-sex civil unions in this context, we see how huge it is. Yes, many municipalities, universities and private employers, including 200 Fortune 500 companies, offer domestic partnership benefits. Yes, many religious denominations celebrate gay unions, with Reform Judaism recognizing gay marriage.

But, until yesterday, no elected state legislature, without having been forced by the courts, passed a bill recognizing same-sex civil unions. When the state's democratically elected Republican governor (albeit elected Lieutenant Governor, but who assumed her current position in accordance with the state Constitution when her predecessor resigned) signed the legislation, the bill became law. Now, the whole nation is watching.

Alas, that so many gay organizations have focused on getting gay marriage through the courts, even as an overwhelmingly majority of Americans oppose calling same-sex unions marriage. They thus don't fully recognize the significance of an elected legislature recognizing gay couples. As of this writing, there is nothing on the web-site or HRC or NGLTF to acknowledge what happened yesterday in Connecticut.

Add PlanetOut "news" to the list of nought-sayers. They copped their story from the AP. Contrast that lack of in-house reportage with their ridiculously misrepresentative headline and \"story\" concerning what little went down at the California state Democratic convention last week. You'd have thought an image of the BVM had appeared in Sacramento - but it turns out the only "presence" there that troubled the delegates - and apparently PO's "news" staff - was that of Governor Arnold's long shadow.

Congrats to everyone in CT who worked to bring this about!

Spain pretty much is ready to legalize gay marriage. Their lower parliament approved the bill to allow gay marriage and their upper parliament is expected to easily pass it.

Not a great way to start for the Pope to protect that marriage!
