Funny how this works out. "Dean Smith and Mike Krzyzewski are going up against each other one more time, but this time it is it the U.S. Senate race and not the basketball court.

Krzyzewski, the Duke basketball coach, and his wife, Mickie, will co-chair a "Blue Devils for Dole" fund-raiser tonight in Durham for Republican Senate candidate Elizabeth Dole.

Besides the Krzyzewskis, the other Dole event co-chairs are Gail Goestenkors, the women's basketball coach, and Mike Gminski, a former Duke basketball star. Other hosts for the event ... include former Duke basketball player Jack Marin.

While the Dookies are lining up for Dole, much of the UNC-Chapel Hill basketball establishment is backing Democratic Senate candidate Erskine Bowles.

Smith, the retired Carolina basketball coach, and his wife, Linnea, were hosts of an event held last month at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill.

Other co-hosts were UNC-CH athletic director Dick Baddour, basketball coach Matt Doherty, former basketball coach Bill Guthridge as well as a number of former players such as Billy Cunningham and Phil Ford.

Bowles got his undergraduate degree from UNC-CH, while Dole earned her undergraduate degree from Duke."

If nothing else, the Senate race should be a bruising fight. It always is when Duke plays UNC.

Dole: 52%
Bowles: 41%

A Zogby International poll, conducted 9/17 - 9/18:
Dole: 55%
Bowles: 32%

A Mason-Dixon poll, conducted 9/12 - 9/14
Dole: 49%
Bowles: 35%

I've found Zogby to be the most reliable polling group. It's interesting to note that they give her the widest margin. As a boy who grew up in Kansas, I've always had the strongest admiration for Liddy Dole (yeah, I know, she's hardly stepped foot in the state). Her charisma and determination are without equal. And God I hope she bitch-slaps that Rodham woman into submission when she gets to the Senate

I agree that Dole is likely to win this race. I think the only hope Bowels has is if they debate. Liddy is very easily flustered when she is off script. Whoever wins will be infinitly better that the creep they replace.
