GOP senator tries gay-friendly campaignInterestingly enough, the guy is Mormon too. I am sure the HRC has no idea how to deal with him.

Actually, if past experience is any guide, they'll come cooing and billing to Log Cabin, whom they've usually ignored and often antagonized in the past, seeking to benefit from our entree to GOP circles but offering absolutely nothing of any real value in return.

Actually, I think HRC has already given him an award for his support of hate crimes legislation. There was a profile of him in the paper (Washington Post? Washington Blade? - can't remember) and it was interesting to hear a very religious person defending gays' right to exist and be free from harassment.

Gordon Smith was originally a Dem target, but then the governor of Oregon decided not to challenge him, and the Dem candidate, Bradbury, is some no-name who hasn't hardly raised any money. Some Dems will still list Oregon as a sleeper race, but most concede they have no shot of beating Smith. Which means that the HRC (as well as maybe the Sierra Club, NARAL, etc.) will probably use him as their token Republican endorsee to show that they really, really are bipartisan.

The HRC has already honored Smith, so stop all this whining about them. (I'm not a great fan of theirs, but they do lap up after Republicans too. They once even sang Al D'Amato's praises, though thank G-d Chuck Schumer still won.)
Smith is a moderate-to-conservative Republican who represents a moderate-to-liberal electorate. He once lost out to Ron Wyden, but has shown that he is not always lockstep with the extremists, like Lott and Gramm and Helms. He's no Lincoln Chafee, unfortunately, but he's also not on the far right wing. He also seems like a decent man.
