The Washington Post has a story in today's paper about how Bush has stepped up his running after Sept. 11.

"It's interesting that my times have become faster right after the war began," Bush told the magazine. "I guess that's part of the stress relief I get from it. For me, the psychological benefit is enormous. You tend to forget everything that's going on in your mind, and just concentrate on the time, distance or the sweat. It helps me to clear my mind."

"I try to go for longer runs, but it's tough around here at the White House on the outdoor track," he told the magazine. "It's sad that I can't run longer. It's one of the saddest things about the presidency."

Yet you ignore the fact that President Bush makes correct use of some rather big words, including "interesting," "psychological," "benefit," "enormous" (Three in one sentence!), and "concentrate." You should be congratulating (whew!) him.

Not that it's likely that I'll ever hold the office, but to me a big drawback* about being in the White House is that the occupant can't go kayaking, skiing, boarding, or running, or enjoy a whole host of other activities by himself. I'd miss time to myself.

Bush is said to run a seven-minute mile, which is pretty darn good. He's faster on foot than I am on my Rollerblades.

Edited to change "the worst thing" to "a big drawback," as another lister pointed out a far worse aspect.

I'd think that "the saddest thing about the presidency" would be having to decide whether to send US soldiers off to die in some war, not whining about not getting enough time to run as much as I'd like.

But maybe my priorities are just a little different than W's.
