A gay and lesbian group was denied permission to rent billboards because using the word gay on billboards does not meet community standards. The planned billboards would have featured gay/lesbian doctors, firefighters, etc. with the caption "We protect you, we are your neighbors, we are gay".

Sometimes I think of moving back to Atlanta. And then I read stuff like this. rolleyes.gif

It probably won't do much, but I just emailed Bert Weiss at Q100...I listen to him in the morning sometimes, and they are gay friendly...so I asked him if he could "make some noise" maybe bring it up on his show.

This took place in southwest Georgia -- very rural, conservative areas and not Atlanta. In Atlanta we actually have large Gay.com billboards around town, often showing two shirtless men together.

I think we should let the fundies have this area as well as South Carolina

Msr.De Blazer, Thanks for posting that story. it's a project that I'm working on. It's intention is to educate or let residents of the state know that gay men and women are not freaks but rather everyday people who happen to be your neighors. If you go to the Georgia Equality website you can see some of the nasty letters that have been written in response. We have turned the other cheek and continued with our progress of setting up the billboards in more rural areas outside of Atlanta, now that the ones in Atlanta have been up a few weeks.
If any Georgia residents would be interested in doing a Public service anouncement about their community life or the work they do, please contact me. We are looking mostly for families and long term partners, but who knows what might happen if we get a good idea. Contact me at Atlantagymguy@aol.com .

LOL...Yeah, my favorite one is when you're driving down Juniper headed downtown where it turns into Courtland; I almost ran onto the curb the first time I saw it!!!! eek!

I was thinking, "WOW, this town has come a long way!!!" biggrin.gif

On Peachtree and 12th or so there is an Abercrombie billboard with some hot shirtless guy(s) that seem designed to make gay people crash their cars. Not that I'm complaining biggrin.gif

There used to be a hot billboard by the Heretic with two shirtless guys hugging. Now it is a "saved and gay" billboard.

A couple of months ago I was approached by a head hunter and asked if I was interested in moving to Georgia. Not even Atlanta, but some small town about 2 hours outside.

I told him that I was gay and he told me that it was no problem, that the company would move us both. WHen Wayne and I talked about it, we decided that small town Georgia probably wouldn't be a good idea.

This is the same head hunter that last year asked me if I was interested in moving to Texas. Maybe I should ask him if he ever gets jobs in Non-redneck states.

Don't be so quick to write off redneck states. The state may be redneck but the town may be liberal. Austin Texas is very liberal, compared to the rest of the state, Dallas and Houston have large gay communities. Even Georgia has a few liberal towns.

I live in very conservative Kansas, we have two main political parties Conservative Republicans and Moderate Republicans. But I live in very liberal lawrence that is very gay friendly. Though I do tend to warn people coming from the west coast that we aren't West Coast liberal, we are more New England liberal. What you do and think is your business just don't rub it my face. Tolerance is the norm, but not necessarily acceptance (Yes, folks those are two completely different animals.).
