Hey Everybody:
Wanted to announce
our new pro football pick 'em contest. George Vikingfan will be an administator.
We urge you to sign up; if you already have a Clubhouse profile, sign in and follow the simple activation.
This pool will allow us to handle many more entries and allow you to track your picks and others in the game. We're excited about it and hope you all participate.
Thanks!

Personally, I preferred the last two year's format where we just sent George an e-mail. Are we able to play without filling in all this info about ourselves? I really don't care to provide any info about myself other than a registration name, and don't feel I should have to.........

I take it you're not in the Clubhouse...at any rate, what I do if I don't feel like putting in personal info is just type an X into each box. Often I can get around those "required field" requirements that way.

You can give as little info as you want: Basically a valid e-mail address and city. We need to have some way for the database to recognize each user separately.
This is designed to allow a lot more people to play and have the results readily available.

I'm a Clubhouse member and I think I signed up for the Pick 'em game correctly. But how do I check to make sure I'm signed up?
Joe in Philly
Aug 25 2003, 06:22 AM
Click on the link for the pick-em game, then log in using your clubhouse ID and password. If you're signed up it'll show "Welcome back..." and have a link to click on for making/editing your picks. If not, it'll ask if you want to sign up for the page, and you click on "yes."

I got all the way to the page where you make picks, but can't see how to do it. The dates and teams are all just text. Am I missing something obvious?

The first game of the season is Thursday September 4, but it's not included in the Week 1 picks.
Jim at Outsports

Mets Boy: You should see buttons to clcik your preference. I will doublecheck.
We did not include the Sept. 4 game simply because it now gives more time for people to sign up.

I made my picks for week 1. I had the same problem as MetsBoy previously but it worked this time. Still can't see where to review the picks.
Jim at Outsports
Aug 25 2003, 06:08 PM
Can you guys be specific with problems. I logged in with a new user name to test and it worked smoothly.
As for how to review your picks, basically go again to the Make My Picks section and you can see what you've checked. To make a fix, simply check on the other team.

On the weekend when I logged in there were just team names (as text) as MetsBoy states. Now there are radio buttons you can use to select your teams. I gather you can change your picks as many times as you like up until the cut-off time.

Jim: here's a dumb question, but just to make everything's crystal clear before Week 1: For the tie-breakers, are we playing by "Price Is Right" rules, i.e., closest without going over, or just closest, whether above or below the actual result? The rules don't stipulate. Thanks.
Jim at Outsports
Aug 25 2003, 10:11 PM
Good question. It is the closest, period. For example, if the total points are 42 and you picked 43 and no one picked 41, then you are closest. If someone picked 41 and you picked 43, you remain tied and go to the second tiebreaker.

I am in! Does the winner of the week still pick the tie-break game? Or will it be the Monday Night game?
Jim at Outsports
Sep 1 2003, 09:50 PM
We have 131 entries so far.
Keep 'em coming. Everyone has to pick the total points for both tiebreakers ahead of time.
Jim at Outsports

We have more than 225 but still time
to sign up.

After the week's games are over, is there some way to look at your picks and see which ones you got right and wrong? The list on the page says I have 5 right, and the leaders so far have 8. I want to know what my picks were, because I honestly don't remember which teams I picked. On the Make/Edit picks page, it now starts with Week 2 instead of Week 1.
And I still miss George's summaries. wink

Hi Joe. What you can do is click under "view others' picks." You can click on anyone's picks including your own.
Jim at Outsports
Sep 7 2003, 05:01 PM
Once you are logged in at the
main Pick 'Em page, you will see This Week's Leaders and Season Long Leaders. But you must be logged in. There are 222 entries.
People can still enter since we are giving away weekly prizes.

I picked Jacksonville, Dallas, New England and St. Louis. Ugh. No wonder.

One thing I really liked about GLVF's game was the weekly preview, that is, how many people picked whatever teams to win, etc. Isn't there a way to report that with the new Outsports format? I know you can see every individual team's picks, but a summary of that nature is really cool!

We have a winner: Rick with 13 wins.
Amazing that with 222 entries, there was no need for a tiebreaker.
You can still play.
Sign up here. We do give away a weekly prize and also season-long for most wins.

In this case, you win a date with Andy Reid, with Philly Fan as your driver.

You can now see how many people took what team. Once
logged in click on "View Picks Breakdown" in the upper right.
Also, when you click on "View Others Picks," then click on a particular person, you can now see their Clubhouse profile. And see winner Rick in uniform.

After my dismal first week of picks, I put personal feelings aside and made more logical picks for the second week. I logged in today to see how i did and to my dismay the system seems to have lost all my picks for week two!! Grrrrrr....
Jim, Cyd, any ideas on how this happened? I may not know much about football stats, but I know I submitted my picks.
Heavy sigh....

Well, it was sure fun to wake up this morning, check out the Pick 'Em page and see my name at the top of the list for overall lead (granted I'm not alone up there), but I sure am surprised. It may not last long, but it is a smile maker. Thanks to Jim and Cyd for yet another great feature to Outsports.

I learned a valuable lesson: Go with your gut. Still, I'm surprised I got 14 right. I'm usually no more than a couple of games over .500.

If there's a tie in number of picks, how does the system then rank contestants? Is it by the tiebreaker question (total points for the Monday night and Sunday night games). What about for successive weeks (ie. Say after 3 weeks: Player One gets 8 + 9 + 10 correct; Player Two gets 10 + 9 + 8 correct. Does the system compare how far off they were on the tiebreaker for Monday and Tuesday for all three weeks in order to rank them? Or does the tiebreaker question only count for the weekly winner?
Jim at Outsports
Sep 17 2003, 08:06 PM
Tiebreaker only counts for people tied for 1st. Not sure how the rest are ranked--i.e., if 5 people finish second with 11 wins, not sure who gets listed first. But it really doesn't mean anything. I will ask our Admin though.
Don't forget to make your Week 3 picks!

Does anybody know if the Pick 'em has been updated to reflect the Monday night game? I'm missing a point for week 6.

Yikes! eek!
Has anyone checked out the top ranked picker for this week. I went to the profile for Kyle1191 and here's what's there:
Place: Liberty, Kentucky
Age: 11
Height: 5' 1"
Weight: 89 lbs
I don't know whether this is a joke or if we all just got whooped by an 11 year old! Good picks Kyle1191...

There's no Sunday night game this week, but two 4:15pm games. Am I to assume that the Chicago-Seattle game is the one to use for the Tiebreaker Sunday Night game?

Sorry Joe. Do you have a record anywhere of who you took.
FYI: We designed the system so people can pick in advance as a fail-safe.
Joe in Philly
Oct 19 2003, 07:37 PM
No--I just forgot. I never made any picks this week. My fault entirely. When I said I was near the lead, I was referring to the season-to-date totals. Looking at the games, at best I would've had 7 wins today (and 8 if KC wins tomorrow night). So if somehow I'm less than 10 wins behind at the end of the season we can all take turns kicking me.
Edited to add: as of now I'm 11 wins behind. D'OH!
