Speech to the House of Delegates in Virgina by freshman Delegate David Englin concerning the anti-gay marriage, DP, civil unions or anything resembling such amendment.

Wow, what a refreshing voice in the debate over gay marriage. Democrats and Republicans across the country should sit up and take notice.

This has to be the most moving statement I've ever heard a politician make on the subject.

What a courageous stand for a freshman Delegate to make in his first speech from the floor of the Virginia House of Delegates. I just hope he can stay in office long enough to make a difference.

This strikes me as having the potential of becoming the "I have a Dream" speech for the GLBT community.

Wow, what an amazing speech. Hopefully that man sticks to his guns (er, no military pun intended).

It was a wonderful speech. But it had very little effect on the rest of the body, which voted overwhelmingly for the Amendment.

It is so sad. I really am considering moving to another state. The amendment will prohibit marriage, civil unions, domestic partnerships, and any other law that might grant rights to gay couples. The Virginia legislature continues to lead in attacking gays and lesbians.

"Virginia is for lovers'....can we sue the state for false advertising?

Here is the response from Delegate Englin to the email that I sent in support of his position on, and courageous speech against, the anti-gay marriage amendment that he made from the floor of the House of Delegates in Virginia. Though it is a form letter and mass response, as it indicates, I think his response was great. I'm glad to hear that he is being flooded with positive responses.

Friend,

Thank you for your terrific note of support for my stand against the
discriminatory amendment to the Virginia constitution that will outlaw
same-sex marriage, civil unions, and domestic partnerships. I had hoped to
respond to you personally, but I'm being flooded with supportive messages
from all over the country, and -- while I am reading them all -- I'm afraid
there are so many that I have to reply with this form letter.

As I open my email to a flood of messages from people all across American
and from all walks of life, I'm reminded of my favorite quote from Robert
F. Kennedy:

\"Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of
others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of
hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy
and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest
walls of oppression and resistance.\"

Please know that your message of thanks and support strengthens my resolve
and gives me great hope for the future of our country. I will continue to
do my part to fight for equal rights for all Virginians, and I hope you
will go to my website, http://www.davidenglin.org, and sign up for my email
newsletter to keep informed about my efforts. I know that together, with
courage, we will transform Virginia and America for the better.

With hope for the future,

David

P.S. - A number of people have asked how they can contribute to my efforts.
It is against Virginia law for me to solicit or accept contributions while
the legislature is in session, but if you go to my website
(http://www.davidenglin.org) and sign up for my email list, we'll let you
know when the session ends.

I would encourage each of you to send Mr. Englin a note of encouragment. We need to support courageous, eloquently spoken, gay positive politicians like this.

That's great! What group is that? Where can I get one? Is there a way to order one on the internet?

Yet another veteran with principles and the balls to back them up. We need more like him and Ohio's Paul Hackett in the beltway.

Hope he eventually runs for a federal office.
