First Lady Laura Bush is on an overseas tour, and she met with French President Chirac this morning. He kissed her hand on the steps of one of the French government buildings. C.N.N. will have all day coverage of Mrs. Bush's overseas trip.
In a upcoming rocky election year, the Republicans see Mrs. Bush as an assette. She is educated, articulate, and wholesome, and not as hated as Hillary Clinton.

"We want to have a friendship with France and I know Americans want to have a friendship with France."

PhillyFan must REALLY be outraged at this.
No true American patriot would go to France and make such a statement.
Arent we all suppose to be pouring out our French wine, eating our freedom toast ect...

I guess Ms. Laura had to take that buss on the hand since she wasn't going to upset W and "French" kiss Chirac....

It's funny, but even with all W's slick pix in NYC with Annan, with Lula, with Herr Schröder, his little march down the lane with Putin, etc., etc., he didn't get a damn thing from any country. Nada, rien, nichts. And Chirac didn't back off from criticizing what was a bad war and an even worse aftermath. Maybe Laura will try to sweet-talk Chirac; Jackie Kennedy was able to soften up De Gaulle's frosty mien.

Not only do the Republicans see Laura Bush as the anti-Hillary, as Nascar007 states, she is also the anti-Judith Steinberg Dean (Howard Dean's wife,) a physician who plans to maintain her career if her husband is elected, rather than follow Laura Bush's lead & give up her job to stare lovingly at her husband as he speaks. There are still a lot of people who won't support a man who's not in a "traditional" one-income family or at least won't support a man whose wife isn't "the little woman."
