The man considered by many to be the greatest hitter of all time has passed away. He was 83 and in failing health for a number of years. Williams was the last man to hit .400 and had an amazing career and life. Condolences to his family.

Very, very few things move me to tears. This did. Deserving legends are few and far between, and now there is one fewer.
My most heartfelt sympathies to his family, to Major League Baseball, to all baseball fans everywhere your loss, and mine, is immeasureable.

Theodore Samuel Williams. So many ways to describe you. Tenacious. Irrepressible. Irresistable. Charismatic. Courageous. Honest. Arrogant AND humble (once even asking Red Sox management for a pay CUT following a bad season). Humane. Phi Beta Kappa PhD in the Science of Hitting. The Splendid Splinter. The Kid. War hero who served your country with distinction as a marine fighter pilot in not one but two wars (World War II and Korea)despite your personal opposition to the latter one. Tireless supporter and advocate for The Jimmy Fund, a charitable arm of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, raising money to fight cancer in children.
Teddy Ballgame, we, your legion of fans, tip our caps to you, "the greatest hitter who ever lived." You earned that title and more. You were not only one of the game's greatest, but a great man as well. May the angels lead you into paradise.
