Cheney Dismisses Critic With Obscenity

QUOTE
Clash With Leahy About Halliburton
By Helen Dewar and Dana Milbank

A brief argument between Vice President Cheney and a senior Democratic senator led Cheney to utter a big-time obscenity on the Senate floor this week.
....

On Tuesday, Cheney, serving in his ceremonial role as president of the Senate, appeared in the chamber for a photo session. A chance meeting with Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (Vt.), the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, became an argument about Cheney's ties to Halliburton Co., an international energy services corporation, and President Bush's judicial nominees. The exchange ended when Cheney offered some crass advice.

\"f**k yourself,\" said the man who is a heartbeat from the presidency.
....

As it happens, the exchange occurred on the same day the Senate passed legislation described as the \"Defense of Decency Act\" by 99 to 1. [The sole vote in opposition was by Louisiana's John Breaux.]
....

This was not the first foray into French by Cheney and his boss. During the 2000 campaign, Bush pointed out a New York Times reporter to Cheney and said, without knowing the microphone was picking it up, \"major-league [expletive].\" Cheney's response -- \"Big Time\" -- has become his official presidential nickname.

Then there was that famous Talk magazine interview of Bush by Tucker Carlson in 1999, in which the future president repeatedly used the F-word.
....

The Democratic National Committee has declared this to be \"Halliburton Week\" to portray administration ties to the controversial company. \"Sounds like it's making somebody a little testy,\" Kerry spokesman Chad Clanton said.

When Kerry dropped the f bomb:
"That's beneath John Kerry," Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card Jr. said. "I'm very disappointed that he would use that kind of language," Card said.

Oh, the hypocrisy. rolleyes.gif

"What will we tell the children?"

Oh, but according to Cheney's office it was just a "frank exchange of views."
RazorbackTX
I didnt know good Christians with their family values used such language.

They actually put the word "f**k" in the Washington Post. And yet, look at this quote from the same article:

QUOTE
During the 2000 campaign, Bush pointed out a New York Times reporter to Cheney and said, without knowing the microphone was picking it up, \"major-league [expletive].\"
Talk about inconsistency.

Cheney is a big time *sshole.

Talk about inconsistency....

I saw that. Makes no sense.
Adam
And to think this happened at a purely ceremonial event!! Didn't Dick ("I'm back from the secret bunker") Cheney learn anything from Bush's performance at the unveiling of the Clintons' portraits? At these moments you play nice with others & mind your manners. Maybe Fox will schedule Cheney and Leahy for the next installment of "Celebrity Boxing."

Post Editor Defends Printing of Obscenity

The New York Times had Vice President Cheney using \"an obscenity\" against Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) yesterday. The Los Angeles Times had Cheney saying \"Go . . . yourself.\" CNN said Cheney used \"the F word.\"

But The Washington Post actually printed the word today for the first time since publishing the Starr report in 1998. And that set the town buzzing.

Do you get the sense things are a little tense at the White House these days?

Let's see.

On Tuesday, right on the Senate floor, Vice President Cheney snarled obscenely at a Democratic senator.

We can only imagine what it was like in the Oval Office yesterday morning when President Bush -- attended only by his new private lawyer -- faced 70 minutes of questions from prosecutors about the outing of a CIA operative.

But not long after that meeting, Bush got downright snippy with an Irish TV reporter when she tried to move him beyond his stock answers.
....

Shawn Pogatchnik writes for the Associated Press: \"President Bush defended his decision to invade Iraq and insisted most of Europe backed the move during a tense interview Thursday on Irish television.
....

Bush: \"You know, listen, nobody cares more about the death than I do.\"
....

Pottymouthed old psycho that Cheney is. Nothing decent or sane or truthful passes his lips these days. Certainly sending him back to Wyoming or Texas or wherever, other than that bunker or Blair House he calls home, will help him improve his oratory.

Perfect as a bumpersticker: Bush / Cheney '04 - Go f**k Yourself
hockeyTom
That would be an outstanding bumpersticker. I want several please.

Nit to pick: it is redundant.

The last time I had sex with a Christian (mormon from Utah at a convention away from wifey), he seemed to say "oh f**k, oh f**k, oh f**k, oh f**k" quite a lot.

eek! eek! biggrin.gif

When John Kerry uttered the "F word" a few times, I maintained it wasn't a big deal. Now Cheney does it, and you're all so righteously indignant about it. Where's the consistency?

Did John Kerry tell another senator to go f**k himself? If so cite proof. Otherwise you've got no case. Just saying "f**k" in some other context is not the same thing.

"Judge," Dick Cheney was the one who brayed on about "civility" in politics, not John Kerry. The Bush crowd crowed about Kerry's use of the word, but remains mum about Cheney's vulgarity.

Cheney also broke Senate decorum, not Kerry; Cheney is the president of the Senate, you'll recall from your constitutional studies. Had the Senate been in session, he could have been cited for a violation of Senate rules.

Finally, Kerry was speaking in an interview, not directly to W, just as W, when he used the offensive term for the anal sphincter about NY Times reporter Adam Clymer, was speaking to Cheney, not Clymer. Cheney's offensive remarks were directly to a colleague....

But then again, you're the same one who claimed in your Ryan post not to be care about "ideology"...denial is not only a river in Egypt....

Now the hypocrites here are trying to distinguish between degrees of the word "f**k." Either it's wrong in both guys' cases or it's not. At least I'm being consistent. I didn't think of it as a big deal when Kerry said it, and I don't think of it as a big deal when Cheney said it, even IF Leahy deserved it by publicly questioning Cheney's integrity (though I'm not condoning such language).

The issue here isn't whether it's a bad thing to say f**k in public. The issue here is that when Kerry did it, the White House publicly lambasted him and is silent on Cheney. If they had ignored the initial incident, there would be no moral ground to object to this incident.
thersis
oh, of course there is a world of difference between dropping an f-bomb and directly telling someone to f**k off (or f**k yourself, i've seen both reported). one involves the use of language. the other is a summary display of one's attitude toward dealing with others. and i think this little episode very neatly summarizes the bush administration's philosophy toward those who disagree with it. hell, it even summarizes its foreign policy!

those two words expose this administration's hubris. they expose their attitude that they are untouchable; that they are always right; that they are above the law (those legal memos regarding coercive interrogation were not merely intellectual exercises, rest assured); that they are somehow ordained.

in each case, they are not, and it will be a hard lesson to learn, but an enjoyable one to teach.

Cheney DESERVES to have his "integrity" questioned.
hockeyTom
Joe, totally agree with you. Cheney has a total lack of integrity, and is far and away to secretive with most of his dealings. Too bad the righties can't see this and the problems with it and him.
