I haven't heard the name Alan Keyes much lately -- is he still a radio show host? I know he was a U.S. Rep to the United Nations under Reagan, and ran for president in 2000.

Anyway, I stumbled upon this item about a crazy fire-and-brimstone speech he gave yesterday at a Republican gathering in Michigan.

I wish a Republican or an anti-gay-marriage person could explain this to me: These folks claim that marriage has always been "one man and one woman" -- it's been that way for thousands of years, in all human civilizations -- Right? But then they try to take this position from Keyes' speech, where he says: "Marriage is the institution that separates America from the majority of civilizations." But... hey... wait. Huh?

He goes on, saying same-sex marriage is only about pleasure, hedonism, self gratification...

Then he takes on abortion, and in Pat Robertson/Jerry Falwell style, blames the 9/11 attacks on abortion:

QUOTE
When (Justice Harry) Blackmun wrote that taking life could be treated as a private affair, we withdrew the public's respect for that life in the womb,\" he said. \"We allowed us to treat it as a choice, as a convenience.\"

So, it should not have come as a surprise that God's wrath would come down on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, he said.

\"He was telling us something on Sept. 11,\" he said. \"When the terrorists struck, he was saying it is wrong to do violence to innocent human life. ... We stand caught in the tangled consequences of our own sin.\"
All I can say is, I hope he is a speaker at the Republican National Convention this year. wink

To answer the questions in the subject line, 1) yes and 2) no. Alan Keyes will be sent to Abu Ghraib and forced to masturbate and simulate sex with a bunch of other pundits before he gets within a hundred miles of the GOP convention this summer.

Why wouldn't they let Sharpton through the door???? He has far to many important relevant things to be said, and need to be heard.

From the article:

QUOTE
Keyes ... headlined Holland's Holiday Inn Monday for the Allegan County Republican Party's Lincoln Day dinner.
Why is it in May?

QUOTE
He laced his speech with remarks about homosexuality, saying at one point that since same-sex marriage has nothing to do with procreation, it is nothing more than \"pleasure, hedonism, self-gratification, being in pursuit of my own good feelings.\"
Whoops. Slip of the old pronoun, Alan? Maybe he meant to say \"their own good feelings.\"

From 2000:

Tucker Carlson

QUOTE
Then, without warning, the evening devolved into The Great Mosh Pit Debate. Gary Bauer, apparently bitter over his fifth-place showing in Iowa, launched a kamikaze attack against his nearest rival, Keyes. By appearing at an event that featured the band Rage Against the Machine (and by subsequently jumping into a mosh pit) Keyes had, according to Bauer, committed an offense against decency. Moreover, Bauer claimed, Keyes had listened to some of the same music as \"the killers at Columbine.\" Keyes responded by comparing his time in the mosh pit to the experience of slavery.

It got weirder from there. By the time it was over, McCain's suggestion to Keyes seemed perfectly sensible: \"Next time, try decaf.\"
More Tucker Carlson:

QUOTE
Politicians, Partisans, and Parasites
My Adventures in Cable News

By Tucker Carlson

Review by Marie Reynolds

....
Carlson impales a long list of public figures who have bothered him throughout the years. Jesse Jackson is a phony, John McLaughlin is a boor, Bill O'Reilly is an arrogant braggart, Chris Shays is a media monger, Alan Keyes is delusional, Ralph Nader is bourgeois, Karen Hughes is a lying flack, and on and on.
