Pat Robertson defends Rush on the 700 club by bringing up actor Morgan Freeman.
QUOTE
\"He started off playing a chauffeur in 'Driving Miss Daisy,' and then they elevated him to head of the CIA, and then they elevated him to president and in his last role they made him God. I just wonder, isn't Rush Limbaugh right to question the fact, is he that good an actor or not?\"
I can't pass by any movie reference on these boards without replying, so here goes:
Where to begin? First, Freeman's first Oscar nomination was for
Street Smart, a movie released several years before
Driving Miss Daisy. Second, anyone feel uneasy about the use of the word "they" in the quote? The passive voice ("he was elevated") would eliminate any perceived distrust of those not like oneself. Who is "they," anyway? Liberal Hollywood? The movies Robertson refers to have fairly conservative ideologies. Or is the fact that a black actor is playing characters of such stature too radical in Robertson's world? The Negroes should stick to playing mammies, servants and thugs? What's next, Mr. Robertson? I'd love to know your reaction to
Bamboozled and other Spike Lee films.
Third, anyone can question anyone's abilities without referring to their race. Finally, if Robertson, Limbaugh's partner-in-slime, had seen
The Shawshank Redemption he'd have realized his argument would be moot (how did Freeman not receive the Oscar that year? He performance was much more subtle and admirable than Tom Hanks' in
Forrest Gump).
