Ventura discusses gay marriage debate
BOSTON (AP) — Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura threw his feather boa into the gay marriage ring Monday, calling it a "cop out" for Massachusetts lawmakers to send a constitutional ban to voters.
"We have a representative-style government. Represent your people and vote and stand by what you believe in," said Ventura, who as a professional wrestler was known for his flamboyant costumes. "Civil rights issues should not be put on the ballot."
Currently a fellow at Harvard University's Institute of Politics, Ventura appeared at the Statehouse alongside State Auditor Joseph DeNucci, a former boxer.
"We're two tough guys here to show support for a basic human right," DeNucci said.
Clad in jeans and sneakers and wearing a full beard and a shaggy ring of hair, Ventura asked, "How is my marriage under attack if two gays or lesbians down the street want to make a lifelong commitment to themselves?"
Ventura, a one-term governor elected on the Reform Party ticket, added: "Love is bigger than government. Think about that."

MAJOR KUDOS to Ventura for standing up for what is RIGHT! (not that Jesse's been known to NOT speak his mind very often, of course

)....now if only HE was on the ballot for President this November?

Good to hear a man's man stand up on this subject. A lot of NASCAR dads will be able to relate to him.

Ventura has always been a social liberal. But I wonder what his feather boas have to do with gay marriage? Was that information needed in the story? Most of the real gay folks in pro wrestling were not the flamboyant characters.

I am not that surprised by Jesse's comments. He seems very socially progressive-liberal. I don't know if he still has a show on MSNBC or not but it used to be called "Jesse Ventura's America". It was good.

To be fair, I have yet to see a political story about Ventura that doesn't mention his feather boa (other than stories about the minutae of Minnesota government when he was governor). Whenever he's on the national stage, his "flamboyant" wrestling persona is mentioned.
