Homeland Security Department Secretary Tom Ridge has resigned, sources tell CNN.

Like England and Israel, when your cabinet sends you a vote of no confidence, a new election is called and the president is removed from office--this is what needs to happen now in Ahmureca.

Ridge was already known to be leaving after the election because he wants to make money in the private sector to pay for his kids' college and the like. So if this indeed occurs, it really isn't news.

Just make sure he takes his insipid color-code chart with him!

This is hilarious. Really, really funny. So nice to start the day with a good laugh. You are joking, right? You can't be serious. But just in case you are...

Perhaps we should have held a special election after the 1996 election...

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Nov. 6) -- Several of President Clinton's Cabinet members have said they will not return for his second term, CNN learned Wednesday. Secretary of State Warren Christopher, Defense Secretary William Perry and Commerce Secretary Mickey Kantor informed the president of their decisions.

Energy Secretary Hazel O'Leary is expected to announce her plans to resign soon, perhaps as early as this afternoon, sources said.

Back to the facts of the matter:

There are reports that three more high-level resignations have been turned in to the White House.

CNN reports that two senior-level White House sources told them that Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge has resigned. Although CNN says it has confirmed the information, the office of Homeland Security cannot confirm the resignation.

...

CNN also reported that Tommy Thompson, the Health and Human Services chief, is going to resign.

Thompson has reportedly said he would take a break from government service after four years on the job at HHS and 14 as Wisconsin governor. The favorite to replace Thompson is Medicare chief Mark McClellan.

CNN also reports that Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage will be leaving the administration as well. Armitage was sworn in on March 26, 2001 and reportedly handed in his resignation Monday.

As Joe in Philly correctly pointed up, it's been known for months that Ridge was leaving to make real money in the private sector. The question I have is what did he accomplish in the post of Homeland Security Department Secretary? The job--hell, the whole department--was ill-defined, with AG John Ashcroft seeming to be more a spokeman for all things related to homeland security & if the recommendations for homeland security put forth by the 9/11 commission ever take place (don't hold your breath) there'll be yet another bureaucracy performing the same duties. The Department of Homeland Security should be allowed to die a natural death, with its job being folded into other departments.

Tom Ridge's resignation statement to be made this afternoon.

Maybe Condi can do this job too.

Maybe this is the post where Bush will reach across the aisle and select a Democrat to head the Dept of Homeland Security?? I doubt it'll happen--loyalty in all things is too important to this administration to bring in a Dem for a security-related position--but Lee Hamilton would be a possibility.

You're forgetting, William, that their memories are quite short when it comes time to remember Democratic administrations. Their silence is deafening in that regard.
