As is always the case, things are starting to boomerang around to haunt the people who leveraged the 9/11 tragedy for political gains.

An article in Time discloses that the DOJ Inspector General has advised several senior DOJ officials to hire personal counsel. A report that has been stalled for months, will finally be released Monday. The report is exceptionally critical of the DOJ's actions following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, particularly with their decisions to round up and detain people on immigration charges. These officials increased their problems by refusing to release many of these detainees, even when it became clear there were no legitimate reasons to continue their detainment.

QUOTE
On Monday, the department's Inspector General is expected to release a report that will be critical of the government's roundup of nearly 800 individuals on immigration charges after the terrorist bombings in New York and Washington. The report, according to someone who is familiar with it, will criticize officials for not allowing many of the detainees to see an immigration judge, and holding detainees for lengthy periods even when it was increasingly clear they had nothing to do with terrorism.
Of course, this information was withheld for a period of time. No reason has been determined, but I don't think it takes much of a leap of intelligent thinking to know what was going on at DOJ.

QUOTE
The Inspector General's office said last July that the report should be ready by October 2002. In January of this year, it said its findings were complete and the report should be out shortly. It's unclear why the report has taken so long to be finalized, but sources say that there were discussions within the administration about the feasibility of delaying its release. Another portion of the report, dealing with conditions of confinement and access to counsel, is expected to be less critical.
The teflon nature of this administration will not last forever. Every administration has eventually had to deal with its poor decisions and willingness to deceive the American people. Given everything we have seen the past couple of years, this is most likely just the tip of the iceberg.

I heard more about this today on the radio. I don't think it'll hurt Teflon W's popularity, though, as most of the people caught in the possibly unconstitutional dragnet were Muslims or non-Christian immigrants who have since been deported.

I'm waiting for the Commission to investigate the phony Weapons of Mass Destruction scheme -- that WILL hurt W's standing particularly with the independents.
