Full Version: Political Correctness Run Amuck: Houston's Soccer Team Forced to Change Its Name

Now this is just ridiculous!

Apparently "Don't Mess with Texas" will have to be retired as a slogan. The Houston soccer team, newly christened the "Houston 1836," after the year of the city's founding, will now be renamed because it's "offensive to Mexican-Americans." Why?, you might ask:

QUOTE

\"Although 1836 was meant to symbolize the year Houston was founded, it also has links to other significant events some Mexican-Americans might find offensive. Those include Texas' independence from Mexico, the Battle of the Alamo and the defeat of Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's Mexican army at the hands of Gen. Sam Houston in the Battle of San Jacinto during the Texas Revolution.\"
If the Alamo offends you, maybe you're living in the wrong country.

MIB, I don't know where you find this stuff, but this really is silly. (Not the article, the ban). There are values to political correctness, unfortunately, instances such as this cheapen and devalue legitimate claims.

My powerful mind scours the brainwaves that permeate this planet, always on alert for such stuff. I humbly accept this awesome responsibility, one that permits me to share such information with the masses here.

So is the state of Texas going to cancel Texas Independence Day in March? I dont see any Mexicans up in arms over it.

I think Id be more offended over the marker they gave Santa Anna where he was captured. Its little more than a boulder behind a paper plant on a ship channel.

The Houston soccer team finally has a new name, having ditched the moniker "1836" because the year of Texas independence offended local Mexicans who apparently harbor irredentist grudges. The team's new name is the Dynamo--but wait, I'm offended! Dynamo was the name of the KGB's soccer team back in Soviet times! rolleyes.gif

As a Houstonian, I can tell you that Texas History is actually REQUIRED instruction for grammar school students.

In addition to that, Texas State Pride is second to none, with parades and festivals honoring Texan Independence (Lone Star State was formerly Republic of Texas 1836-1845).

AND NO WHERE IN MY EXPERIENCE, until this recent episode with team name, did I even once hear of opposition or sympathy for Mexican-American 'holocaust' that apparently, and to this day, still gives them gas.

Though I am embarrassed, I am comforted by the fact that no one cares about soccer anyway.

I would object to the "no one cares about soccer" comment, but then I remember that the New York MLS team was just renamed "Red Bull New York". It's too bad no one here cares, seeing as the U.S. in the number nine team in the world.

Rephrase...

Soccer sucks anyway.

Dynamo is a weak name. I read that the US soccer league team they had in 1984 was the Dynamos so its not too original. I also remember we had a minor league team called the Dynamo in NC when I was in high school.

I liked 1836 better. A lot of the teams are going towards names that reflect club soccer like in Europe. The Dallas Burn were renamed FC Dallas, which sounds more professional. New York Red Bulls-- not so good.

Let's see who else was posting about this non story:

Perhaps after the false outrage on the right (wait, after the UAE/DP World boondoggle, isn't the new word "racism"?), this will spur the right-wing officials who control Texas and the federal government to implement a sane, secure immigration plan that welcomes legal immigrants and stops the flow of illegals. Because if the Anglos want their version of history to be told in perpetuity, it may not happen if the vast majority of people in Houston and Texas are people whose own social and cultural histories are dramatically different, i.e., from the defeated country, Mexico.

You know, ft, you crack me up with your asinine, dismissive tactics. My link was directly from the Houston Chronicle, one of the most left-wing papers in the entire country; yet you pop in here dodging the issue again--as usual--by somehow trying to discredit this because the Drudge Report or FOX News also reported this.

Who gives a rat's ass? CNN and ESPN also reported it. Face it: it's politically correct bullshit, and you can't handle that.

Unbelievable. rolleyes.gif

The main point that I do see was made but got lost (as usual) in all the rude, hypersensitive responses on the Retort was that the overwhelming mnajority of spectators at the matches WILL be hispanics. I hear over and over from so many folks deriding soccer as a sport, league, etc., but I suspect that these folks specnd very little time actually watching the sport. Not your cup of tea? Fine. The fact of the matter is that the huge majority of people interested in soccer in this Texas city will be of hispanic origin and it makes good sense, if you want their business, to listen to them. Think the Mexican-Americans should just get over it? Well, not so fine, but whatever. This soccer team wants their money and changed the name as a business decision. If they did not feel they needed this section of the population's $$, they would have turned a deaf ear to the opposition.

It's pretty pathetic when people/organizations give in to stuff like that.

With that being said, it was a dumb name anyway...
