Great Letter in the Washington Post:

Byrd's Flamboyant Showmanship

Of all people, Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.) called President Bush's carrier landing and subsequent speech "flamboyant showmanship" ["Explanation for Bush's Carrier Landing Altered," news story, May 7].

Of course, Mr. Byrd should know about flamboyant showmanship. After all, his home state has several things named after him, including:

The Robert C. Byrd Highway; the Robert C. Byrd Locks and Dam; the Robert C. Byrd Institute; the Robert C. Byrd Life Long Learning Center; the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program; the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope; the Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing; the Robert C. Byrd Federal Courthouse; the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center; the Robert C. Byrd Academic and Technology Center; the Robert C. Byrd United Technical Center; the Robert C. Byrd Federal Building; the Robert C. Byrd Drive; the Robert C. Byrd Hilltop Office Complex; the Robert C. Byrd Library; the Robert C. Byrd Learning Resource Center; and the Robert C. Byrd Rural Health Center.

Sort of reminds you of all the statues, pictures and images of Saddam Hussein in Iraq, doesn't it?

I think it's great that Mssr. Bush got his little joy-ride on the carrier, and I don't think the Democrats should be criticizing him. I mean, he finally got a chance to see what it's actually like to serve in the military, instead of pretending to do so and letting your Daddy fix it all up for you.

I don't think it's fair to say that everyone who serves in the Air National Guard is "pretending" to serve in the military.

Unfortunately for Maximum Leader, the truth is out.

So, while the news networks have sat on this explosive story for months, it's well documented that George W. Bush never showed up for National Guard duty for a period of approximately one year, possibly more, in 1972-1973. Despite all the talk about \"honor and dignity,\" Bush seems to have a problem meeting his commitments.
The carrier incident is beginning to backfire, as the public finds out the truth about Bush's desertion. Looks as if Karl Rove misjudged how much the public could accept before its gag reflex was set off.

Bush deserted.
That was my point - I do not know what I personally would have done if I had been eligible for the draft during Viet Nam, but I simply have no respect for someone who didn't even bother to show up to defend the skies of Alabama from the Viet Cong!

Or maybe he had "other priorities" like Cheney, who I guess is still hiding out at that "undisclosed location." Maybe Mary is with him which explains why she couldnt speak out against Santorum.

Lebensrummy was going to cut the defense budget and the size of the forces as part of his "reform" before W. let 9/11 happen, so what's your point? Clinton at least admitted where he was. What's Walker Texas AWOL's lying excuse going to be this time?

Liar liar never tires

Shocking news. Just a few minutes ago, I learned that a flight officer on the plane that carried Bush to the Abraham Lincoln was killed in a training accident last month.

The Indiana where he grew up is Indiana, Pennsylvania, which is also Jimmy Stewart's hometown.

Indiana Native Dies in Plane Crash

QUOTE
The U.S. Navy confirmed Friday that an aviator from Indiana was among four crewmen killed in the crash of a Navy jet in the Pacific Tuesday.

Lt. Commander Scott Zellem, 35, was one of four San Diego-based airmen in a S-3B Viking jet that crashed on an uninhabited island after it had taken off from the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis, deployed in the Western Pacific.

The others killed were Lt. Patrick Myrick, 31, of Santa Monica, Calif.; Lt. James Pupplo, 34, of Selden, N.Y., and Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class Joshua Showalter, 24, of Fontana, Calif.

Zellem was a 1987 graduate of Indiana Area High School and a 1991 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

He had been a pilot in the U.S. Navy for 13 years. In May 2003, he was a flight officer on the first of two Navy S-3B Vikings that carried ... Bush onto the USS Abraham Lincoln, where Bush addressed the nation following the fall of Saddam Hussein in Iraq.
....

Zellem's family announced that a memorial service would be held later in Indiana and that Scott Zellem would be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Zellem is the son of Ted Zellem of Charlottesville, Va., and Sally Zellem of Indiana, a retired executive director of the Indiana County chapter of the American Red Cross.

At Indiana high school, Zellem was a star linebacker and tight end on the football team. In 1986, he was named the team's most valuable player and the defensive player of the year. He also was the District 6 Quad A defensive player of the year.

Zellem also played football for the Naval Academy.

Umm...Phil...not so fast there. Although military members are forbidden from comment, many privately complain bitterly about him. And, although registered Republican, will be voting for Kerry.

It's a good thing he didn't help John Kerry land the plane because his military record would be shamed beyond belief. RIP, soldier.

See http://optruth.com/main.cfm for a good look at what military personnel think about the US efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq. I especially love the part about our soldiers riding along with Kellog Root and Brown employees (who make LOTS more than our soldiers) to keep them safe from the folks we liberated.
