Okay, both parties engage in scandals (I'm old enough to remember Jim Wright's scandal, and Wilbur Mills, and Abscam, etc.), and BillyBob Clinton had his overblown sex scandal/spectacle, for which he was impeached by the GOP Congress.

But here's a current tally of GOP Congressional and White House related scandals, many of which are pretty serious. Impeachment isn't going to happen, but really, should these people, from a sheerly ethical standpoint, remain in power? Did W say he was going to restore "dignity" to the White House? Or did he actually misspeak and mean "chastity"?

Scandal tally, courtesy of Carpetbagger.com:
  • * Cheney's secretive Energy Task Force was investigated by the GAO and the case is currently pending at the Supreme Court.

    * The Plame Game is under investigation by the Justice Department.

    * Bush's Medicare scam and the circumstances that led the administration to lie to Congress about the cost of the legislation is under investigation by the HHS inspector general's office.

    * The massive intelligence failure that led Bush to lie to the world about the Iraqi threat is under investigation by a congressionally-authorized independent commission (which Bush fought the creation of).

    * Bribes offered on the House floor to Rep. Nick Smith (R-Mich.) in exchange for his vote on Bush's Medicare plan are under investigation by the House Ethics Committee and the Justice Department.

    * Attorney General John Ashcroft was under investigation by the Federal Election Commission for violating campaign finance laws in 2000, and the FEC concluded that Ashcroft accepted $110,000 in illegal contributions.

    * An investigation into House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's criminal fundraising schemes in Texas -- which allegedly used corporate funds to help state GOP lawmakers -- is already before a Texas grand jury.

    * Republican staffers on the Senate Judiciary Committee were investigated for stealing thousands of confidential memos from Dem computers, a matter that has now been referred to the Justice Department for a possible criminal probe.

    * Republican Connecticut Gov. John Rowland is under a criminal investigation (and an impeachment investigation) after he lied about prominent state contractors and several government aides paying for refurbishments to his lake-front cottage.

    * Former Rep. Bill Janklow (R-S.D.) was under investigation for vehicular manslaughter, a crime for which he was later convicted.

    * The Pentagon launched a formal investigation into well-armed evangelist and three-star General William \"Jerry\" Boykin, Bush's pick for deputy undersecretary of defense for intelligence, and his record of extreme religious rhetoric.

    * The circumstances that led to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 are under investigation by a congressionally-authorized independent commission (which, again, Bush fought the creation of and then later resisted cooperating with).

The Washington Post also lists a number of Congressional GOP ethical abuses too:

So which inquiry is going to be resolved next? (Janklow's is settled.) Will Dr. Kindasleezza be forced to testify? Will we learn more about the GOP theft of Democratic documents? Who leaked the info on Valerie Plame? Can the moderates on SCOTUS override the pro-Cheney Scalia and open up those files to show what actually went on with the VP's secret energy panel? Inquiring CITIZENS want to know!

And even though he's not part of the GOP, he's an arch conservative, one of the administration's closest international friends, and he's in serious trouble! (Netanyahu, another dear friend of the W family, is certainly waiting in the wings to spring.)

Even with this evidence, I still can't call her KindaSleeza. Still, she does infuriate with her condescending denial or evasion of reported facts... From Truthout.org:

HIGHLIGHTS

Pre-9/11 Intelligence

CLAIM: "I don't think anybody could have predicted that they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile." – National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, 5/16/02

FACT: On August 6, 2001, the President personally "received a one-and-a-half page briefing advising him that Osama bin Laden was capable of a major strike against the US, and that the plot could include the hijacking of an American airplane." In July 2001, the Administration was also told that terrorists had explored using airplanes as missiles. [Source: NBC, 9/10/02; LA Times, 9/27/01]

Richard Clarke's Concerns

CLAIM: "Richard Clarke had plenty of opportunities to tell us in the administration that he thought the war on terrorism was moving in the wrong direction and he chose not to." – National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, 3/22/04

FACT: Clarke sent a memo to Rice principals on 1/24/01 marked "urgent" asking for a Cabinet-level meeting to deal with an impending al Qaeda attack. The White House acknowledges this, but says "principals did not need to have a formal meeting to discuss the threat." No meeting occurred until one week before 9/11. [Source: CBS 60 Minutes, 3/24/04; White House Press Release, 3/21/04

CLAIM: "No al Qaeda plan was turned over to the new administration." – National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, 3/22/04

FACT: "On January 25th, 2001, Clarke forwarded his December 2000 strategy paper and a copy of his 1998 Delenda plan to the new national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice." – 9/11 Commission staff report, 3/24/04

Response to 9/11

CLAIM: "The president launched an aggressive response after 9/11." – National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, 3/22/04

FACT: "In the early days after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the Bush White House cut by nearly two-thirds an emergency request for counterterrorism funds by the FBI, an internal administration budget document shows. The papers show that Ashcroft ranked counterterrorism efforts as a lower priority than his predecessor did, and that he resisted FBI requests for more counterterrorism funding before and immediately after the attacks." 9/11 and Iraq Invasion Plans

CLAIM: "Not a single National Security Council principal at that meeting recommended to the president going after Iraq. The president thought about it. The next day he told me Iraq is to the side." – National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, 3/22/04

FACT: According to the Washington Post, "six days after the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, President Bush signed a 2-and-a-half-page document marked 'TOP SECRET'" that "directed the Pentagon to begin planning military options for an invasion of Iraq." This is corroborated by a CBS News, which reported on 9/4/02 that five hours after the 9/11 attacks, "Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was telling his aides to come up with plans for striking Iraq." B Man, I hear you, but I have zero respect for the woman these days. I have watched her lie on a regular basis now for three years, and it's grown increasingly enraging. Like the rest of W Ltd. she lies and dissembles and fudges and bends and warps the truth until it's like a Möbius strip and you can't tell which side is up, or where the truth ever was. Facts are nothing but fiction to these people, and it's well beyond spin.

Perhaps if 9/11 had occurred or W Ltd. had launched the execrable Iraq War II based on half-truths, non-truths and outright howlers I'd pass off her lying--and the rest of the steady diet of lies by W Ltd.--as par for the course, but we've lost thousands of lives, in the U.S., in Iraq, in Spain and Morocco and Indonesia and Turkey, etc., and she, like the people around her, refuses ever to take responsibility for ANYTHING W Ltd. has done or failed to do. Even Reagan acknowledged the failure in Lebanon!

They can't even bother to tell the truth or get their stories straight about minor things, like prez Awol's Turkey Day stunt, so really, Dr. Kindasleezzy as a nickname hardly scratches the surface. She's a hell of a lot sleazier and dangerous than just "kinda." They all are. (I still hold out hope for Colin Powell, though he's so degraded himself it's almost tragic.)

Now, back to the scandals. Who's going to roll for leaking Plame's name? Will Fistee or Hatchie pay for their aides' electronic kleptomania? Will we learn who offered Mr. GohioP that bribe? Will hubris finally bring DauphinLay down?
