Gore's Son Gets DUI Ticket in Arlington

Associated Press
Sunday, September 15, 2002; Page A12

The 19-year-old son of former vice president Al Gore has been ticketed for driving under the influence near Fort Myer in Arlington, a Gore family spokesman confirmed yesterday.

Albert Gore III, who attends Harvard University, was pulled over and ticketed by military police in the early morning hours of Sept. 5 just outside Fort Myer, but was not taken into custody.

Edited to add: I'm not sure why he wasn't taken into custody. He was nabbed in Arlington County VA by the Ft. Myer MP's. I do not know if the Arlington County PD would ordinarily have been called to take any other 19-year old stopped for DUI into custody or not. I assume the MP's called the Gore family home, which is only about two or three miles from Ft. Myer, to get someone to drive Al Gore III and the car home.

I know, via e-mail and a scanner list, an ardent Republican scanner enthusiast who lives in Arlington. His police and fire scanner runs 24 hours per day, so if anyone heard this, he did. I'll forward a copy of this message to him to see what he has to say about the usual protocol followed in instances such as these.

Jenna, Li'l Al - or does he go by "Trey?" - they're BOTH spoiled little brats who deserve some REAL jail and SERIOUS public service time to show them not just how lucky they are but also how the rest of the world lives. May I suggest a work-study-no play semester in Gary, IN for each, separate bedrooms of course!

Then we'd end up with a Jenna Bush Gore and Al Gore III linkup, kind of like Julie Nixon Eisenhower and David Eisenhower, though Jenna and Li'l Al'd probably be a lot more fun-loving that the Nixon-Eisenhower duo!

BTW, he's had troubles before--and nearly died, remember, as Mid'l Al told us so poignantly back in 1988, or was it 1992, or 2000? Oh, who can keep up with all his attempts to lose the presidency?

OK - I'm gonna say like I said before - " Lets keep the kids of politicians out of it" - BUT lets see those people who bashed the Bush girls bash the Gore kid. (OK - listen-the silence is gonna be deafening.)

If there's got to be an uproar about any of these kids, there ought to be an uproar about Gore. Isn't DUI worse than just getting caught drinking underage? What if he killed someone?

He [Gore] should have been arrested and taken to FEDERAL court in Alexandria if it happened on Fed property. I fit happened on Arlington Property, ACPD should have been called and taken him to the court house. You DO NOT let drunks go like that especially if you do not have a breathalyzer test. Now they will not be able to get a conviction

He cc:'d the reply to the "arldeb" list. Interested parties can read about that at http://www.topica.com/lists/arldeb/ and even sign up if they so choose.

Sounds like Li'l Al will be able to beat this one. If they didn't get a breathalyzer or blood test & didn't get video of him slurring speech or stumbling around, it will be just about impossible to prove that his blood-alcohol content was above the legal limit. Any half-ass lawyer could beat this.

I don't know the full deatils; just what I've seen in the paper. If you're under 21, I believe it is the case that any alcohol on your breath is grounds for a DUI. If you are 21 or over, the BAC has to be greater than 0.08%, right? Maybe the MPs did do a BA. If Gore had a passenger who was not impaired, maybe the passenger drove the car home.

Dunno. Details as they happen, I am sure.

This kid has real problems with cars -- remember in 1989 when he got hit by a car after an Orioles game -- and was nearly killed.

He got a speeding ticket on the Outer Banks [of North Carolina] a few years back too. He was driving an Oldsmobile.

I feel like a bit of a dirty old man asking this question, but the kid's over 18, so what the hell: Is the Gore boy cute? I've never seen a decent picture of him.

Here's a picture of Albert Gore III -- don't know how recent it is though ... does look like he has a linebacker's build.

AG III played football at Sidwell Friends, a private school in DC. Al and Tipper would watch him play. With its ".edu" TLD, Sidwell Friends is an early adapter of the 'Net.

Football page:

I'm hoping that the team's nickname is that wonderful oxymoron, "the Fighting Quakers," but I'm not sure. William 1865, you'll be disappointed to hear that the team's main strategy is not appeasement; the varsity is currently 2-0.

Google for "sidwell friends football al gore" to find all sorts of links, such as http://dailybeacon.utk.edu/issues/v82/n20/...people.20a.html

Albert III, who wears No. 55, is listed as a 6-foot-1, 230-pound lineman on Sidwell's roster. He played center and linebacker Saturday and also punted, with one punt blocked in the first quarter.
