Bolton drew fire from Democrats in 1994 when he said at a Federalist Society forum that \"there is no such thing as the United Nations.\"
\"If the U.N. secretary building in New York lost 10 stories, it wouldn't make a bit of difference,\" he said.
I guess this guy will be working from within to bring down the UN...sorta like the LCR is successfully working from within to change the Redumblican Party.

Bolton will be good for the UN. Someone with courage needs to ride herd over Kofi Annan given his recent lapses and knowing critics like Bolton are what's needed now. The opening post neglected to cite Bolton's work on repealing the infamous "Zionism = racism" resolution, although the article told the whole story. Let's hope he can do other good things like keeping nations such as Cuba and Libya off the Human Rights Commission.*

Well there's a difference between someone using constructive criticism vs. calling the UN pretty much worthless.

It's a little tough to pay what's already been paid, unless you're sloppy with finances or waaaaay behind in the news. As this link from an old "Peoples' Daily" shows, this debt was repaid long ago. Surely you critics won't begrudge
this source.
Kudos from the Chinese.

Wrong - read the story from "People's Daily." Bringing the debt current was authorized and accomplished in the first years of the current administration.

Actually:
QUOTE
Under the deal, UN members agreed in December to cut the US general dues assessment from 25 percent to 22 percent of the 1.1 billion dollar annual administrative budget, and a separate assessment for peacekeeping from 31 percent to about 27 percent this year and 26.5 percent by 2003
If the vote was in February 2001, then the "December" when the deal was reached would have been 2000--during Clinton's admin. Its just that the Republican controll Congress wouldn't approve it until under Bush's reign.

Perhaps, but that's speculation. The fact is that the debt mounted under "Bubba" and was repaid under Bush - however offensive that may sound.

Its not offensive. However, only Congress can approve spending bills. Its common knowledge that the Republican controlled Congress of the 1990s consistently refused to authorize full payment of UN dues. The GOP did not want to give funds to any organization that dealt with abortions. Some Republicans even wanted to withdraw from the "leftist" UN completely. Finally, in 1998 the GOP agreed to give just enough to the UN to prevent the USA from losing its vote. But it still never agreed to full payment of back dues until 2001.
Lets not give the Republicans credit for solving a problem that they created.

...Perhaps, but that's speculation.....
gmginsfo, could you please explain to me the definition of the word "speculation"? Specific dates, as HotlantaTarheel supplied, are NOT speculation, they are fact. There is a huge difference between speculation and fact. It just goes to show you, gmginsfo, what a truly great president Bill Clinton was. Look at what he was able to accomplish with a Republican controlled Congress. Also, please quit referring to former President Bill Clinton as "Bubba". It is terribly disrespectful. Former President Bill Clinton earned my respect, something that President Bush has yet to do.

When I call Clinton "Bubba", it's done as a term of endearment... IMHO, he's the best President we've had since Carter, not to mention the last legitimately elected one.

We won't call Clinton "Bubba" as long as we also agree not to call Bush "Shrub".

I doubt you will get agreement on that.

Dear Miller Time,
After careful consideration of your "bubba" request and a personal vote, the jury has come up with two answers for you..
1. No.
2. Are you shittin me?

MB, As MarcusF stepped in to clear up who used the B-name first, and Copman backed it up with an entirely reasonable proposal, we can now focus on the remaining 2 issues.
Speculation = guesswork. Yes, the timing is right, but motives remain unknown. And the fact remains that the debts were also racked up - that's NOT a reference to WJC - under his reign. So I stand by my post.
As far as any respect for the man, that disappeared from my screen on several occasions, starting with his abandonment of gays in the military, continuing thru l'affaire Lewinsky and his reckless pardons - can you say "Mel Reynolds?" - his long goodbye from office, his making a perfect ass of himself by hamming it up after the 911 Memorial Service at the National Cathedral and, most recently, his recommendation to the failing/flailing Kerry campaign that it turn its back on gays. You DO remember that, don't you? In short, I have no respect for him at all, and an equal amount for his termagant wife.

Calling Hillary a skank is a very nasty, totally uncalled for insult to the former first lady, now Senator. I deplore that. BUT what does that have to do with hating or liking America??? Or were you joking and I didn't catch it?? Please explain the connection.

Isn't it utterly amazing how this post became about the Clintons? I just love the way Republicans obsess over this couple. If I ever did refer to President Bush as "shrub", I will never do so again. Why all of the name-calling of Hilary? Do powerful women scare you?

Maybe powerful women secretly turn them on. I can see their fantasy now. On their hands and knees, with Hillary wearing a big old king kong strap on dildo, doing them while whipping their butts, and calling them cheap trash
Aren't all gay republicans bottoms?
