Top White House anti-terror boss resigns
By P. Mitchell Prothero
From the Washington Politics & Policy Desk

WASHINGTON, March 19 (UPI) -- The top National Security Council official in the war on terror resigned this week for what a NSC spokesman said were personal reasons, but intelligence sources say the move reflects concern that the looming war with Iraq is hurting the fight against terrorism.

Rand Beers would not comment for this article, but he and several sources close to him are emphatic that the resignation was not a protest against an invasion of Iraq. But the same sources, and other current and former intelligence officials, described a broad consensus in the anti-terrorism and intelligence community that an invasion of Iraq would divert critical resources from the war on terror.

Beers has served as the NSC's senior director for counter-terrorism only since August. The White House said Wednesday that he officially remains on the job and has yet to set a departure date.

"Hardly a surprise," said one former intelligence official. "We have sacrificed a war on terror for a war with Iraq. I don't blame Randy at all. This just reflects the widespread thought that the war on terror is being set aside for the war with Iraq at the expense of our military and intel resources and the relationships with our allies."

....
"This is a very intriguing decision (by Beers)," said author and intelligence expert James Bamford. "There is a predominant belief in the intelligence community that an invasion of Iraq will cause more terrorism than it will prevent. There is also a tremendous amount of embarrassment by intelligence professionals that there have been so many lies out of the administration -- by the president, (Vice President Dick) Cheney and (Secretary of State Colin) Powell -- over Iraq."

Bamford cited a recent address by President Bush that cited documents, which allegedly proved Iraq was continuing to pursue a nuclear program, that were later shown to be forgeries.

Hmm, zero reportage on this on the loony box, where the reporters were frothing with their idiotic interpretations of who "had the bead on Saddam" and whether or not the PsyOps were working and so on. Aaron Brown ought to have his ass shipped over to Iraq immediately--he could BORE Saddam to death!

Back to the topic: this resignation is yet another sign that there are some in the government who believe this administration is taking the wrong tack. If we had an independent media, or a liberal one, we'd be hearing a lot more about this. Instead, it's lies like Iraq fired two missiles which we both shot down, but then now it's four Scuds and we shot down two, but then it's four Ababils and we shot down two...

JUST GET SADDAM AND BE DONE WITH IT!

Counterterror Team's Turnover Continues
NSC Official's Departure Is Abrupt

The resignation Monday of Rand Beers, the National Security Council's senior director for combating terrorism, marked the second round of upheaval in the White House's counterterrorism team in less than 18 months. Beers, who had served twice before on the National Security staff in previous administrations and held a number of senior State Department positions, was brought on board in August after the abrupt departure of Wayne A. Downing as deputy national security adviser.

Beers's abrupt departure came as the administration raised the domestic terrorism alert status and heightened security efforts around the country on the eve of the U.S. military invasion of Iraq. A White House official said yesterday that Beers left for "personal" reasons....

A number of officials noted that Beers was one of the most experienced NSC officials.

....
News of Beers's departure was followed yesterday by the third resignation of a U.S. diplomat over Iraq policy since last month. Mary A. Wright, the number two official at the U.S. Embassy in Mongolia, had spent 15 years in the foreign service and 26 years in the Army and Army Reserves.
